I have a pair of Denon 1000 coming in and after doing some searching about these HP (and the identical 1001), I noticed alot of folks suggest changing out the "wires". For a newbie and someone who isn't really mechanically inclined (never touched a soldering iron), how difficult is it to do this?

Pads are very sensitive, I wouldn't recommend doing it on your own, at least not on brand new headphones. If you have old headphones lying around you don't mind wasting money practicing on, then try it on those, otherwise I'd say ship 'em out, it generally costs the same minus shipping costs to have any good company recable for you.
