forgive my stupidity: i have a chaintech av710 as my default sound card for
playback w/ speakers installed to its line out. the second soundcard (which is not indicated for use in windows xp) is hooked up to a separate set of speakers. when i put an audio cd in the computer, no matter which sound card i select it comes throught the desktop speakers which are supposedly only connected to the chaintech. how when the audigy2 soundcard is selected is it coming through speakers it is not connected to? does windows change the default somehow? very confused thanks.

That cable is not needed in Windows XP FYI

I am also confused by something. I have a Chaintech AV710 and audio cd's play fine through the cd-rw drive, but I didn't connect the audio cable from the drive to the motherboard.

Would I get better sound quality for cd's through the AV710 by connecting the audio cable from the cd-rw drive to the motherboard?

Never use the lil cable from the CD-ROM to your motherboard or soundcard, period. Audio data from CD-ROM is transfered over the IDE channels, do not use those cables.

Yes. Windows XP uses digital playback over the IDE cable instead of using the DAC built into the CD-ROM/RW drive (which usually sounds like junk). You should leave that cable unconnected.

but how is my audigy2 coming through speakers only the chaintech is connected to through its line out? the sound default in windows xp, when set to audigy and the cdrom is used should not be able to come through those speakers.
