Are there any cell phones with SPDIF out? I sure don't trust the D/A on my cell phone, nor on an iPod or an iPhone, or my laptop or desktop computer for that matter. I mean people here spend $1000 on D/A... its important. So how can we turn our cell phones into the portable DIGITAL .flac library they're supposed to be? Maybe a phone with USB?
Alternatively, it might be possible for a portable DAC to accept data from the phone over Bluetooth. But the A2DP profile is lossy compressed. Or hell, put a SD reader in the DAC... plus a couple buttons and a display...
Is the state of the art that we are left with carrying around a second portable source device, that none of the thousand different cell phones will serve up digital? And I just have to carry 3 devices on my bat belt (cell, source, dac)...
OK my friend suggests "I think most of the hardcore portable users do not use a phone. They use some other kind of mp3 player, like the Cowon D2 that has better D/A converters and amplification, i guess." This opens up the secondary question, does the D/A always go in the mp3 (.flac) file source, or is there some device like a SD card to USB or SPDIF player (with some buttons and display for selecting songs) that could then plug into an iBasso D10 in my pocket... Still, why can't an iPhone or gPhone just put the music out over USB?
