HI: The CD3000 are one fantastic sounding headphone and very comfortable to boot. They are very easy to drive and sound great on almost any source and any amp. The CD3000 are a great buy and worth the price.
The grado RS-1 is also one fantastic sounding headphone and very comfortable with the vwap pads to boot. they are very easy to drive and sound great on a decent source and on a decent amp.
The grado SR-225 are also a great sounding headphone and very comfortable with the vwap pads and are very easy to drive and sound great on any source and any amp.
So where does the CD3000 stand against the two grados?
Well since they all sound great then I find there are a few other factors to take into account.
CD3000 is very big huge actually and get hot on a warm day. Also the heaviest of the bunch.
RS-1 are smaller than the CD3000 and lighter and don't get near as hot on a warm day. They are also considered a very high end headphone by many.
SR-225 are even smaller than both the other two cans and very light and also don't get very warm on a hot day but beat out the CD3000 and RS-1 on portable use. The Cd3000 are not portable to be very practical for portable use. The RS-1 are better suited on a better source and home amp to be used on a portable rig. So the SR-225 wins hands down in a portable rig than the other two headphones. I a/b the RS-1 v SR-225 on my portable rig and found both headphones to sound near the same. Fantastic sound mine you fore portable sound but when I put the RS-1 on my home rig they sound at their best. Better than the SR-225 with the bigger and stronger amp and better source than my portable rig. To sum up I feel that all three headphones sound just fantastic and are all a great buy with the SR-225 being the best buy for the low cost of the there headphones.

Thanks LTUCCI1924. Keep up the 225 praises! Your comments are part of the reason I bought a pair yesterday. Now awaiting arrival.

It's hard for me to imagine any Grado for portable use (with the possible exception of the 40's) because of the cord non-flexibility and length. Transportability though is a different matter. I do wonder if part of the reason of the near exact sound in portable use between the RS-225's and RS-1's is any lossy (ATRAC, MP3, etc.) file is going to have some sort of limit. What do you think (I assume you meant your MD player when discussing portables)?

Also what does your secret code mean at the bottom of your sig?

HI: How are you? Good luck with the 225s. When I say portable I mean going to different rooms in my house and in my back yard. I also take the 225s to my friends house and sit in her back yard with my portable rig. You are probably right about the MD compression. The code you are referring to is my attempt at art work. LOL. It represents me warring the RS-1. Look at it now and you might see it as that.

I have been useing the Grado SR 225 for porable too. However, because they are not closed, and do not work good on airplanes, I had to get a closed phone. I have the Sony MDR 7506 on the way. I agree the SR 225 is a great headphone for the money.
