Totally agree. The CD3000 is an excellent headphone at $400 dollars, but not at $700. For that much money, I will buy the W5000 and JVC DX1000.

We all know that.

I just can't understand why people want to pay that much for the CD3000 when you can buy a better headphone for $700.

Agreed, I currently own 2 pairs of CD3Ks one of them Headphile modded, and they are indeed excellent but I wouldn't pay more than $400 for them. For $700 there are much better cans than the CD3Ks. They are discontinued but they are by no means rare or hard to find. One can come across a pair for much less than that one in the Ebay auction if one has the patience to wait and look.

For those who really like Sony sound is USD 710 the best buy, IMO. If you up here and know that much, you will be careful of course But not every person on earth have the possibility to find one. Thats why Ebay still a great place to buy, sometimes

"Better" is subjective, and some people really want the specific CD3000 sound.

These high CD3000 prices are really driving me crazy and it's making it damn near impossible for me to find an affordable pair. I really want to hear what the CD3000 sounds like, but I can't at these ridiculous prices ($400 seems right, but people seem to be charging $500+ these days).

What CD3000 alternatives are there? Not necessarily "better" alternatives, but headphones that most closely match the CD3000 sound signature?

I wouldn't trouble yourself with it too much, Azure. Imagine the SA5000 with a wider soundstage, less bass extension, no spike around 2.5kHz, and a slightly more prominent but less resolved treble, and you're basically there. The SA5000 sounds closer to the CD3000 than any headphone I can think of, but even then, it's not that close, as I've detailed.

I know that sound signature is subjective, b/c I've owned 3 different pair of CD3ks in the past. It is entirely up to you if you want to try them, but I will buy the W5000, and JVC DX1000 for that price.

I could listen to a CD3000 last night and was impressed. However, a slightly EQ'ed DT880 can do an almost identical job. Maybe even better, as the CD3Ks bass hasn't got a very layered texture.
