The talk in the HDCD thread reminded me to ask about ANOTHER format labeling on CDs. I have a couple of albums that are labeled "ADD" on the back. I assume that this is an acronym for "Analog to Digital Disc" or something of the sort, because I know that the original material on these discs is too old to have been recorded digitally. I have a question regarding a couple of my albums though.
My copy of Pink Floyd - DSOTM does NOT have this "ADD" labeling on the back, and fyi, I have the 1992 Digital remaster. Even if this disc was remastered digitally, isn't the original recording on analog?
My copy of Boston - Boston (1976) is described on the front as "Compact Digital Audio - Digitally Remastered Analog Recording" but is not labeled as "ADD" on the back.
While my copy of Metallica - ...And Justice For All (1988) is labeled "ADD" on the back and on the disc, my copy of Metallica - Master of Puppets (1986) is not. The back simply states "The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment. We have attemted to preserve, as closely as possible, the sound of the original recordng. Because of its high resolution, however, the Compact Disc can reveal limitations of the source tape."
From this, I am assuming that a standard labeling as "ADD" did not surface until 1987 or 1988. Just guessing though.
I have discs from as late as 1994 labeled as ADD. Hmm, why such a late conversion to Digital?
Also, my copy of The Cars - The Cars (1978) is even labeled HDCD, and gives no indication that it was transfered from analog. When did digital storage become availiable to recording companies?
