Newbie here, but want to learn and upgrade. that being said, I would like to know if there is a decent ($300.-$800) CD player out there that would also play mp3's off a CDR (the bulk of my music is in this format) as well as regular cd's. Currently usining a Philips DVD/MP3/CD combo player > LD2 Tube amp> HD650's and feel the player is the curent weak link. All comments are welcomed, Thanks.

I just purchased the Sony DVP-NC555ES. It's the 5-disc carousel version of the 999ES that plays CD, DVD, SACD, and MP3 discs. I wanted an SACD capable player around $300, so the obvious choice was the Sony ES series. The older Redbook/SACD-only models like the SCD-C555ES and 333 were popular and seemed to perform decently. And when modded by SACDmods or any of the popular modding services, they seemed to jump in performance rivaling more expensive reference players. I'm not sure if the older ES models like the popular SCD-C555ES play MP3 encoded discs though, you might have to look into that.

Have you looked into improving the audio from your computer? I suppose if you enjoy listening to mp3's that you use a computer, so building a system around it might be a good route. You can buy a high quality soundcard such as the offerings from E-MU. Alternately, you can buy an outboard DAC like CIAudio VDA-1 or a used Benchmark DAC-1.

If you're really locked on buying a standalone player, my advice in your budget would be to buy a Sony ES player like the DVP-NC555ES ($300) and then get it modded ($400). You should have a universal player that should perform really well for ~$700. For redbook alone, in that price range an EastSound CD-E5 would probably be a better buy, but if you really need the mp3 functionality then a universal player would be your only real option.

Good luck.

The Denon DCM280 and 280 5 disc changers play CD and Mp3 CDs, I cannot personally say what they sound like, I was considering one of these myself , the 380 can be found for about $250 or about $150 from eBay. At that price you could also buy an Onix XCD-88 ($300) just for CD duty...

The (probably better) Marantz 7300 also plays MP3 CDs but is very hard to find over here.

Interesting ideas. Yes, I am open to other options other than getting another combo cd/mp3 player. If I get an external DAC, This would go between the cd player (or sound card) and amp, correct?? Also, Which is better, Coaxial or Optical line from CD player (or sound card) to DAC?
Thanks
