Cayin N8 TOTL DAP: KORG Nutube, Dual AK4497, 4.4mm phone/line out

As
We have received the revised PCB on 11th, and the 90% stuffed board is ready for test today. If you look at the photo carefully, you'll notice the day code is 20180605, and the Nutube photo that I showed here l(#539) is dated 20180426. So things are move on very quickly and we should be able to demo this revision at Toyko and London. If everything goes well, this will be our final revision and we can proceed to production version after this.

There is a blank area in the last photo, that is where we'll install the Nutube. The previous NuTube photo has illustrated the trick we are experimenting to reduce microphonic of Nutube. Turn out that trick is very useful when we test it at our laboratory, but when we pick up N8 to walk around in our factory, we know we need to reinforce our shock absorption design to make sure the Nutube will perform satisfactory even when someone holding or even shaking the N8 while listening.

And the final design will look like this:

we literally developed a suspension system for the Nutube installation. Let's see if we can build this promptly and test it at the July event. :beerchug:

Quicker than words can tell, we have received all the parts required to test run our one-of-a-kind patent-pending spring-loaded suspension system for Nutube installation in our N8 DAP.

The holes on the installation kit is designed to slot into the spring-suspension holder on the main PCB, as illustrated on the following rejected PCB sample.

There will be another structure to further limit the movement of the installation kit so that the spring suspension can function at maximum efficiency. In our experience, once we removed the microphonic effect of the vacuum tube, we can achieve a darker background and enhance 3D details. You probably won't feel the microphonic effect as important if you only listen for 5-10 minutes, but when you listen for longer hours, you'll notice the irritabile effect and that's what we are determined to get rid of through this design.

The new engineering sample has been assembled yesterday, with a custom 6500 mAH lithium battery, we have to increase the thickness (maximum) of the N8 from 20mm to 21mm in order to accommodate the new battery. Glad to confirm that the new sample will be demonstrated at Toyko Portable Audio Festival (14-15 July 2018) and CanJam London (21-22 July 2018) respectively.

Wow that is a HUGE battery :O

We are pushing the limit, if there is 0.5mm space available, we'll try a bigger battery again.

Love the attitude on the N8's development. Even though its in it's final stages, the team is still pushing to squeeze out as much as possible. :beerchug:

Impressive.
Any idea on costs?
What is the warranty?
With all of that battery and new designed Nutube holder I would ask about long term reliability.
Very interested and likely will improve with iterations.

Hopefully these nutubes don't burn out like traditional vaccum tubes. The pair on my WA7 died after just 2 years with daily use.

Nutubes offers up to 30,000 hours of continuous life expectancy. In practical numbers, if you are going to use the N8 eight hours a day, the Nutube will last around 10 years.

We'll announce the price soon;

Cayin offers 12 months warranty which is in line with our tube amplifier and DAPs. By the way, the Korg tube is a lot more durable and reliable then regular vacuum tube in speaker amplifier.

Thanks.
If a speaker or headphone amp tube goes bad it is easy to replace.
I (and I'm sure others) have purchased various light bulbs with impressive hour durability marketed, and then replaced them.
I'll love to see/hear results.

I'm of the camp of "you can increase thickness by even 0.5cm if it allows 15h playback SE/nutube or 30h balanced 4.4 on flac"

Partial like that hehe. ZX2, Plenue D, Wm1a etc...
