Cayin N7: A Voyager of Unexplored Frontier

is the battery replaceable on the N7--if not, does Cayin fix this when out of warranty?
I want to buy the N7, what's the process of battery replacement as I want some longevity

Assuming your N7 will be out of warranty by the time the battery were worn out. You can send the N7 DAP back to Cayin HQ at Zhuhai, we charge US$35 to replace the N7 battery, this is parts and labor included but excluding logistics and tax consequences. We understand you probably need to pay more than that on mailing costs but unfortunately, that's the only way to get this done, as of today, there is no fright carrier willing to accept an uninstalled "bare" Lithium battery.

Drop an email to service@cayin.cn for more details, some countries might need a battery safety certificate before you can mail the DAP with the battery, and our service team can provide that beforehand. You can also seek help from your local Cayin dealer as they know the paper work to send and receive DAP from China and might provide some cost saving option if we can send the DAP back to you inside his next shipment.

Fortunately, nothing bad is happening with my N7, I just noticed that previous firmware versions were released regularly every six months:

N7 Firmware v1.3 - 2023-05-11 > N7 Firmware v1.4 - 2023-11-01 > N7 Firmware v1.6 - 2024-05-10

so in November there should be another version, maybe just an Android security update :)

We didn't have any firmware renewal plan. If there any outstanding bug that we need to take care of? or you have run into any problems that need to be taken care of by firmware update?

I think increased "idle shutdown" timer would be great addition. 2 hours is too short. I want my dap ready to play when I leave it for few hours. But if I leave it alone for more than 16-24 hours, I rather it would shut down itself.

I don't know if this is possible to achieve through software in this model, but a non-overampling (NOS) mode would be useful in the new firmware.

That's a r2r thing. Here n7 has 1 bit dac. Thus everything in pcm format (flac, wav etc.) needs to be converted into dsd form. You can choose between dsd64 - dsd512, that's all you can choose about sampling.

If you play any dsd file then it play natively, no oversampling.

Yes I’m in! Own a N7 4 wks now. Fantastic fantastic fantastic player!!!

One data points I’d love to share. Pair with HE1K stealth, I found A class M gain 64 DSD is best for Mozart piano works, A class H gain 128 DSD best for Beethoven piano works. My 2c tho. Anyone have similar impression or different configuration?

I don't hear any difference between 64-512

Welcome to the club! I'm still enjoying mine, half a year in.

Unfortunately my cloth ears cannot reliably detect differences between any of the DSD rates, except when I'm playing native 512 DSD (512 then sounds noticeably richer than 64).

(I did not buy the player for native DSD and I cannot see myself getting too sucked in because of file sizes and availability, but I have bought some classical music that I otherwise wouldn't have heard, and do enjoy the texture of orchestral music recorded this way.)

I also cannot reliably distinguish between A/AB class, though I can hear slight differences at point of switchover.

Even with my C9, I cannot reliably ABX between Class A or AB, or even SS or Nutubes.

Of course none of this affects what I do enjoy about the player and amp, a lovely smooth sound that brings out the best in a lot of my gear. But I would like at some point like to ask my more discerning friends on Head-fo for a few pointers of what distinctive features to listen out for in each mode.

Anyway, enjoy your player! It's a beauty.

Hi everyone. So I just recently sold a N7 and the person was having issues with the PRE mode output.

I just wanted to ask about the difference between LO and Pre mode. LO is clean full volume output to the amp while Pre mode is variable voltage to the amp meaning that you can control the volume to the amp.

I just want to ask because Pre mode doesn't change the volume on the Lineout side. Or, do you need a specific amp that allows Pre-amp mode such as the Cayin N9. Volume wasn't changing when changing the volume or such.

I hope someone can provide an answer or I might be headed to do a return on the item.

Anyway, thanks!

You don't need to pair it with a specific amplifier to use the Pre-amp output of N7. If you merely want to test the function, you can connect a pair of IEM or headphones to the 3.5mm or 4.4mm LO/Pre connector, select Pre output, turn the volume down to zero, play a music track, and then turn up the volume gradually. It might or might not sound good (lack of current amplification), but this will demonstrate the Pre-amp function conveniently.

When you change the DSD output sample rate, does it change instantly or only when you skip to the next track?

@Andykong FYI... I just upgraded the Hiby music app in both my N7 and N8ii DAPs to version 2.1.2 using the app's own update feature, and it is completely non-functional on both DAPs. It crashes continuously and does not even recognize the SD card or network music sources. I tried deleting the user data and cache and starting with a fresh configuration, but this made no difference. Please let Hiby know they have a major bug in this update.

Yikes... All my playlists are in the Hiby app, won't be updating then. Thanks for posting
