Cayin N6iii: Nothing is Impossible with Gen2 User-replaceable Audio Motherboard

Nov 12, 2024 at 5:48 PM Post #106 of 598
Now that I think about it my guess is that the r2r module will most likely be 1bit.. it's silly I didn't think of it before but considering the success and experience cayin gained with n7 and ru7, there would be no reason to go back to the predecessor of r01 and ru6

Most people seem to have preferred the newer 1bit dacs and especially considering the less amount of resistors, allowing easier implementation due to limitations of the modules, it becomes the more logical and natural choice.

I'm guessing the board will not have a 4.4 dedicated Line out, and won't have class A, so it won't shoot the n7 in the foot.

Why my n6iii always click/pop on the beginning of the playback when there are a sampling rate change?
This is something I experienced with the N7 and N30LE.

@Andykong there is a screen protector applied already on the front display? If so it’s been put on so cleanly that I can’t tell. 😂

The back has this bit of plastic on it though.

Yes, that was the first thing I wondered too then I just add the screen protector on it. Does your n6iii click/pop when sampling rate change on the beginning of the playback like every time?

Yeah, I think the front doesn't have a screen protector on it.

Let me load up Apple Music and swap between some different resolution files and test for you. I don't notice this in my usage because I use Spotify.

Using Apple Music and swapping between the two tracks...

Michael Jackson - Bad (Hi-Res Lossless 24-bit/96 hHz ALAC)

Ilan Bluestone - Raindrops (Lossless 24-bit/44.1 kHz ALAC)

I don't hear any popping at the beginning of either track when going between them. Have you tried disabling MQA decoding on the audio settings? I may be mistaken but I've read elsewhere that can cause pops.

okay, I pretty sure my set has problem! Didn’t try on Apple Music only local and tidal. I tried turning that off, reset it but it all click. Ytd, I swop the audio board with the demo set in store and it doesn’t click like mine, decide to sent it in.

I tried some DSD512 file and flac. Some transitions have a very loud click.

Some? Mine is if there’s a sampling rate change, it will click quite loud every time
Yes. I noticed sometimes it doesn't happen. I couldn't recreate it consistently.

Blind buy as i love the c9ii so much I believe this will be a good product.

Initial impression: The dap itself is slightly warm (the machine not the sound quality) without the leather cover, but it's much better with the leather cover.

I love the sound quality. Using Camelot to test and N7 to compare.

It's not as warm sounding as N7, but it has better detail retrieval and has better separation than N7. Using the same song, I can hear more details from N6iii.

Bass is elevated like N7 but more condensed. For example, camelot's bass is slightly loose with N7, but with N6iii, I can hear more note weight and concentration.

Disclaimer I am not sure if I hear it correctly for the following: Songs seems to be slightly brighter in the upper region but also have more details for n6iii.

That's all.

Thank you for your first impressions. I'm also thinking about buying the N6III. The fact that there are still a few modules to follow makes things very interesting. So which of the two N6III or N7 do you prefer? I also have the N7 and I like it very much.
