My first good pair of headphones came last week. They are the Philips HP890. I'm quite happy with them but want to buy a pair that will have completely different traits (still keeping the 890s).

I am guessing that the 890s would be considered warm or layed-back cans. Not sure though as I haven't heard any others. I would appreciate any advice from those that have heard these on how you would categorize them.

I'm betting the grado sr60s are its polar opposite. In the past, when I listened to cheap headphones I would often press them against my ears to increase the sound or experience. Just interested to see what the experts think.

thanks all.

i've never heard the 890s, but if they are what you describe it sounds like some grados might be good to switch things up.

any 890 owners wanna jump in here?

will75: The HP890 is already quite a good headphone considering its moderate price - and it's also not so far away from neutral, though it can be a bit piercing in times. From that point, you could go to groovier (AKG K240S for example) or even to mucho mightier in the bass (Beyerdynamic DT770(Pro)/250...), to more analytical (AKG K501, Beyerdynamic DT880 or even DT931...), more in-the-face (Grado SR80), more neutral (Beyerdynamic DT250/250, Sennheiser HD580 or HD 600...)... uhm... much more piercing (Sennheiser HD 470)...

, ... errrr... much more expensive and esoteric (Stax, AKG K1000), ... even bigger earcups (Sony MDR-CD2000/3000) ... more wood (Audio Technica AT-Wxxxx, Grado RS 1/2) ... more metal (Sony MDR-F1, Grado SR325...) ... guess I'm running out of ideas, now...

seeing as how you are into rock (and the Phillips feel like pillows) - the obvious 180 is Grados. portable: sr60, most near the HP890 price - SR80 (?), most rock like - SR225 (supposedly), something to think about - RS1.

But you may miss those pillows...
