Hey all:

I was wondering what you mac users use for audiophile quality sound. I am not sure if iTunes is capable of doing so. Is there a different program used? Or, do I just not know what I'm talkin about :-D

I usually just use VLC. It gives me very good sound and I don't have to worry about it screwing with the stream trying to "improve" the music.

iTunes as well as any other Mac app will put out bit-perfect sound from the digital out unless you tamper with "improvement" settings. Just make sure those are off and then worry only about what comes after the Mac in your rig

As always I recommend checking out iVolume though, it's a very convenient app to bring tracks up to the same level of volume without negative impact on the sound.

I would just make sure that your word-length and sample-rate settings under the Audio MIDI utility match, or set higher than that of your audio file, which is typically 16-bit/44.1kHz if you're playing AAC, ALAC and AIFF files. I set my word-length and sample-rate setting at 32-bit/44.1kHz, with the system and iTunes volume controls set at 100%. I haven't heard any jitter whatsoever, or clicks/pops.

iTunes is definitely capable of audiophile quality sound. In fact on Macs it's bit-perfect by default. (Assuming your global Audio MIDI Setup settings (in your Utilities folder) are not set to resample.) There is no need to go hunting for other software; there is no advantage to be had in sound quality. If you don't like the user interface, try Play.

iTunes -> Digital output -> External DAC
If set up correctly the Mac have bit-perfect output from iTunes. So its capable for sure...
