I have an old Crown D60 amp. I would like to upgrade the caps. what is the current wisdom concerning capacitor replacements?

obviously I can't replace polarised capacitors with polycarbonates, but what would you replace ceramics with, non-polarised, etc.

For electrolytics, use low esr ones. Depending on where they are in the circuit, I would use Blackgates in the signal path and feedback, minimumally. You can spend big bucks for the BG's. A more reasonable low cost polar cap, would be the Cerafines(if you can find them) and Pana. FC's.

For ceramics, I would use polystyrene and polypropylene films.

thanks guys.

I just printed out 18 pages of "Parts Connection" capacitors. there's a lot of info in there. I just hope i can fit them into the crown d60 chasis. the audio-caps look delicious, as do the Hovland Musicaps, Solens and Auricaps.

i guess i'm just going to have to go through the schematic, check the sizes and leads and put in an order. I already have the MUR801s on order, and am thinking of replacing the transformer with a toroidal. that should open up the sound some.

man, the things i have to go through to get a good amp for my K1000.

Thanks. That's a whole lot of reading. It'll be interesting to see what they cost. I'm leaning towards 2 100VA units. If the prices allow, I may be able to double that. I'm still waiting for C.C.POON to send me the cheater cords for the SM70. If they don't get rid of the hum, the unit will have to go back for a refund. I don't think a replacement will do anything, seeing as how he spec'd this one before sending it to me. so the crown may be all that i'm left working with. maybe I'll get so disgusted with the whole project that I will just connect it to the Radio Shack.

Solens are ass but cheap, Hovlands have amazing bass extension but can sound hard up top and are huge (film caps), Auricaps are soundstagers without much signature in the size of a polyprop - be aware that their leads are fairly thick but is the same stuff used in Audience's $$$ wire. Look at ICW caps if you want more smoothness at the expense of inner detail but without the mush of the Solens. Cheap too, you can get them from diycable.com
