I mow several times weekly for relatives and neighbors (summer job), and I was wondering if there is a good sub-$50 set of cans that would be suitable. I wear a set of overear ear protectors, so an earbud/IEM style can would be preferable.

Honestly, from what I've tried, there is prety much nothing that I've gotten to work with ear protectors. Everything moves around or is extremely un comfortable when you put the protectors on. I'm going to make a jump for a pair of lower end IEM's to see how well they isolate. I've been looking for a NRR(Noise Reduction Ratio) like earplugs have for cheaper IEM's but I have found none.

Yeah, currently I just stuff the iBuds that came with my iPod in my ears and call it a day. I usually only listen to spoken word stuff i.e. Teaching Company Lectures anyway, so I think it'll have to do!

I currently use AKG k26p's. They work OK, not great. I do not like IEMs.

If you want IEMs try them with foamies. They will isolate great. Your other options would be a bigger closed can that covers your ears.

With my Creative ep-30's and my ipod at about 40% I can hear the music just fine when mowing. So that plus over ear protectors you should be fine. And I think most IEMs isolate about the same.

Do what I did, mod a pair of Peltors. I did this Friday with some Koss Portapro and Peltor Optime III, and now I won't have to kill my co-workers. I am working in total silence, listening to good sounding music whenever I want to.
I actually prefer the sound of these to my Sennheiser 580's.

BowerR64 did the same a while ago, and even documented the process:

Nothing is new under the sun, I wasn't first, but I still enjoy the extreme isolation and good sound!

Oh, and the Optime III are VERY good at damping sound, but somewhat large...
