CanJam Volunteers
There will be volunteer staff positions at CanJam SoCal 2024 to assist at the Registration Desk. You will need to be able to commit to a 4 hour shift on either the Saturday or Sunday of the event. Volunteers will receive free weekend tickets along with an event T-Shirt. These Are The Dark Ages: The Problems of Current Headphone Measurements

Headphones have been measured for over 50 years now, and yet we still can’t predict listeners' impressions of headphones like we can with speakers. In the absence of good predictive results from measurements, we've entered an era of fundamental doubt about the ability of objective measures to provide a full analysis of headphones, and many completely un-evidenced measurements have been proposed in an attempt to fill this gap. We have progress, but also dogma, mysticism, confusion, and fanatical interpretations of what audio data is and means - we are in the dark ages. These problems won't be solved quickly, but let’s identify them to start working towards the headphone renaissance.

Loudspeakers have come a long way, and conventional manufacturing techniques are tickling the limits. With the advent of MEMS, new possibilities open up! But what actually is a MEMS speaker? How many different types are there? In this seminar we’ll learn which limits will be expanded with this technology, and which limits still stand. Learn about applications for these speakers and whether or not they will replace conventional speakers.

New Headphone Target Curves Defined on the B&K 5128: How Different Do They Sound and Which One is Most Preferred?

The release of the Brüel & Kjær 5128 HATS in 2018 ushered in a new standard in accurate measurements of headphones. Its introduction also meant that headphone target curves defined on the older standard were no longer valid when measured on the 5128. Since then, several different headphone target curves for the 5128 have been proposed, but most lack scientific validation based on controlled listening tests. This raises an important question: how different do they sound from one another, and which one is most preferred? My talk will give an overview of the various headphone target curves proposed, how they were derived, and some analysis of how different they sound from one another.

Critical Listening: How to Judge

Many designers use listening tests to improve the design of their products. But since the provenance of recordings are unknown, how can one be sure that genuine improvements are being made so that real progress towards transparent reproduction is being achieved. It is very easy to think that an "improvement" is actually better when it's worse. Objectively assessing sound quality is key and this seminar will explain how. This will be followed by a Q&A session when you can ask any question about Digital audio.
