I've been on a never-ending quest for perfect portable phones. I mainly use them in the library, on the subway, and on planes, so naturally I've been using a lot of canal phones.

A did a few searches and found people using the Sony MDR EX tips on the Apple in-ears. I tried it, and then I tried putting on other tips on all my canal phones as well. The Etymotic ER6 tips fit on them too.

So here are my impressions.

Apple In-Ear stock: As other people have said, it's hard to get a good seal. The sound is kind of airy and thin.

Apple In-Ear + Ety silicone: This was not a good seal at all for me and was even thinner than the Apple stock phones.

Apple In-Ear + Ety foam: This was really weird. Ety ER6 (not 6i) are known for being bad bass. But when I put the foam tips on them, the bass and mids filled out, but the treble was horrible.

Apple In-Ear + MDR EX: I'd say this sound is the most balanced out of everything I tried. But a few of my albums with prominent high mids sound horrible. Very thin and scratchy. Classical sounds okay/good but not great.

I was wondering if some other people could try them out on different tips? I'll try putting all the different tips on the MDR EX71's, 81's, and Ety's a little later.

the tips from the panasonic hje50, sony ex51/71 and ex81 are the same. only the sharp md33 is a bit different. the sharp ones goes lower to the bud as compared to the others, which makes for a 'closer' sound.
