1.) is there a big improvement with the e4c's over the e3c's? are the e4c's better for the money?
2.) shure > etymotics in bass? are there any etymotics with good bass?
3.) are they easily driven by a DAP (i.e. ipod, zen micro)
4.) will there be a significant improvement if they are driven by a portable amp (i.e. Pocket ampV2, go-vibe, portaphile)

Most of these questions will need specific models to answer fully. I'm checking out a set of ER4S and I can tell you right now that they are somewhat adequate unamped but really come alive amped. From what I hear from friends, the ER4P is the opposite, it shines unamped off an iPod and amping it does little to help the sound.

The Etys have substantial bass, they are NOT gutless wonders. The Shures likely have a good bit more bass (no experience with them), but instead of asking which has more, ask which is more appropriate for what you want to do and whether the cans you are interested in have ADEQUATE bass.

I wouldn't say that any Etys I have listened to do not have "good bass" as you said. When properly driven (depending on the model) each has done well and provided what I felt was at least adequate bass.

As for the E4c, I'm as anxious to hear reviews as you are. There are a couple of "initial impressions" floating around from people who have had a shot at demoing them, but I haven't seen any in-depth reviews yet.
