just curious.. does FLAC vs v0 LAME really make a difference when running an ipod with "lower" end headphones (sr60/80/etc)? no amp/dock connector.. nothing fancy, just an ipod and some headphones

well?

Even if it did (I havent tried such a comparison). It certainly wouldn't be worth the massive battery life hit that lossless causes for me. (i use between 128 and 192 on the iTunes encoder mostly).

I do hear a difference between 128k itunes and ALAC. Thats with a set of fake px100 out of an iPod photo. But that difference isnt worth the loss in battery life either.

When actually put to the test most people cannot tell flac from v0 regardles of system,
or should I say . . . . most cannot tell the difference AND prove it repeatedly in an ABX test. I am one of them.
Of course most Head-Fi members are the exception

There was a poll here a while back asking this very question. I'll see if I can find it. If I remember correctly, out of about 100 respondents, only 25% claimed that they could actually tell the difference. However, only 2 of those respondents supported their response with ABX test results, which the rules of the poll required.

I can't tell the difference. LAME is generally transparent for me up to -V5.

Although I have not given it a careful listen, I have not noticed a difference between flac and V1 on my portable out of my e4c's.

And truely the question of import is not whether I can tell the difference, but rather whether you can tell the difference (but I'm sure you already knew that and really just wanted some opinions).

The ipod's DAC chip is not really substantial enough to reveal differences between a well encoded mp3 and lossless. You may hear differences using a really great DAC, but certainly not on an ipod and not with low end headphones. I think even a top quality headphone plugged into an amp using an ipod as the source wont benefit from lossless. For my ipod i encode my music at 160 vb and I've very happy with the sound. For my music server I encode Lossless and I use a Bel Canto DAC 3 as the source.

LAME is quite fine for me. I have difficulty telling the difference when I get above 256 kbps mp3s so I have no reason and no desire to go lossless.

Probably not.
But I have not run any ABX test, so can never be sure.
