Can single layer, multi-channel SACDs be played......

I want to know, because i am not willing to invest in a multi channel system as yet. Will the player be able to convert this signal to a stereo signal?

The reason why I ask is that I see quite a few discs that I like that are not hybrid, or stereo based SACDs, and this would make SACDs mute to me in a sense, as if I cant get discs that I like without having a multichannel system which i wont invest in for some years to come (lack of space, convenience, and money), then I should just stick to cds.

I am curious so any help or info on this would be helpful.

If you have a stereo SACD player, yes. If not, no.

No single layer SACD can be played on a sacd-less stereo, whether it's a stereo SACD or a MCH one (which also includes a stereo track). Some dual layer discs can, but only if they are marked as "hybrid", meaning they have a redbook (stereo-only) layer.

So, net, ALL SACD's have a stereo track (although some SACD and Universal players had glitches and couldn't read the stereo track off a few mch SACD's....there are very few examples, but EJ's Yellow Brick Road is welll documented early on) but only if it's a hybrid will it be able to be played on a stereo with no SACD capability (i.e cd only).

Hopefully, I will have a SACDmods.com modded Sony DVP-NC55ES in a week or so, so I should be equipped with an SACD player then, but if all SACDs are supposed to have a stereo layer, then I am pleased to hea this. This means I can buy any sacd without having to worry aboutgetting a multichannel setup.

It's mandatory for all SACDs to have a stereo mix. Multi-channel and the CD layer (hybrids) are optional. However, single-layer SACDs are going the way of the dodo bird.

BTW, the CD layer of a hybrid SACD can also be HDCD-encoded.
