That should work. My understanding is the only reason there's not preamp outs on the desktop balanced is there just wasn't room.

Yes. I've used mine this way and it work fine, though it does mean switching things around when you want to use your phones. Tons of gain and fairly transparent when driving a Quad amp in my setup. It's a good idea to switch off both HP amp and power amp before switching out ICs for headphones.
