I'm buying a new laptop. I noticed that all the new laptops just have "mic in" inputs, where my old one has a "mic in" and a "line in".

I thought the "line in" worked a little better at registering sound on my old comp.

However ... are new laptops designed to capture sound just as well from the "mic in"?

I'd like to know before I buy, because there are sounds I'd like to use my comp to record!

Mic in's are typically very noisy on standalone recorders (such as dat's and HDD recorders). I imagine on a laptop, where sound is usually skimped on, I imagine the mic in will sound terrible. I think an aftermarket soundcard may be in order.

In a word, no. I do not think so.

The microphone jack is set up for the output of a microphone, which is differnet than line output (or a headphone output). Use them as marked for best performance.

But is there anyone who has a new laptop who uses it to record sounds (from tapes, and LP's for example)?

How do you do it?
