so, I've been looking at ways to get a balanced source as part of my very slow crawl towards balanced audio, the CI VDA-2 was enticing, it lets me use it as a single ended device and then with a cable upgrade, I can have balanced XLRs

however, I started thinking "where is this dual RCA output configuration familiar from??" "oh right, MY CDP!!"

my CDP (Yamaha CDV-W901, which I love positively to death), has a pair of identical L/R outputs, so I'm curious, if I just built a little circuit to flip the phase 180* on one of those pairs out, and then the CI Audio cable, or something conceptually identical (I know theres a lot of alternatives to buying that exact cable, thats just my example), would it give me a legitimate balanced output?

for reference here's the CI stuff:
CIAudio VDA-2
CIAudio VRX-1

the next question is, whats the cleanest way to build this phase inverse circuit?

There is always a way to create the inverted signal from just the + (or - for that matter) portion of the single. But the various implementations have their pros and cons. From my experience the two easiest options are either something like the DRV134 chip (do a search) or adding an ouput transformer. I'm sure there are other options that you could pursue, including researching whatever DAC is inside your player to see if it already has a differential output that isn't being used. That's all that comes to mind right now though.

how about this? Ron is using this circuit to test my test Bijou.

both of these seem like solutions if I had a single single-ended out, I have 2x single-ended out (parallel L/R), the DRV134 would take single ended in, and put balanced out, while this would work, I'm thinking theres probably a cleaner way to just get an inverse from one of the pairs (if I just have one of the pairs fully inverse, thats all I need), so couldn't I just switch the poles about?
