Can Grado RA-1 drive HD-600 / 650?

no first-hand experience here, but . . .
grado's being low-impedence require more current to drive them, unlike the Senn's who's high impedence requires Voltage.
With the RA-1 being designed for Grado's I would expect a rather poor match with those Senn's.

The opamp inside the ra-1 can give 70mA while my cmoy can give 35 mA. My HD600 are driven better than standard headphone outputs of a Receiver.
But don't expect fine matching and fantastic sound with the RA1.

Yep, just ask Hirsch, IIRC he even likes the combo, and he has heard a lot!!!!

Yes, I agree that driving it should be no problem, but the sound will not be spectacular in terms of detail and soundstage. You get more of that by going with a PiMeta or a really upgraded CMoy, but if you like the euphonic effect of the RA-1 coloration then it may keep you happy.

The Senns do not require much current, so if you go with a battery amp I would prefere something with more than 9V power, like a 2x9V Cmoy with 1000uF caps - that would sound quite nice.

When I had the RA-1/HD-600 combo, I felt that it had a better synergy than RA-1/RS-1. This may not apply to HD-650, which is in some ways a more difficult headphone than HD-600. I used to use the RA-1/HD-600 with a PCDP as my work rig, and spent many happy hours listening to it.

I too liked my HD 600's better with my RA-1, than with my RS-1's.

The HD 600's had great synergy with the RA-1, the HD 600's sounded more natural than the RS-1's.

But when I tried my HD 650's with the RA-1, they sounded grainy with recessed highs, the HD 650's don't sound good at all with the RA-1.

I later sold my RS-1's and RA-1, and now have the Headroom Max Amp, which is absolutely fantastic with my HD 650's.

I'm now also using my HD 600's on my PC with my Total BitHead.

Best wishes,

Paul.
