After reading some threads here and a few reviews I am more confused than ever about which headphones to start out with. I have an ultra cheap sony D-FJ61 portable and my PC which has SoundBlaster Live Value. Im looking at either the sr-60 or sr-80 grados. Can my weak little portable handle the 80s? Is it worth paying the extra money to get the 80s if it can handle them? I don't have the money to get any sort of amp right now so I need phones that will sound good without one. Please help a confused little newbie to the audiophile world. These will be my first set of *real* headphones. I know if anybody can straighten me out, you guys can! Thanks in advance

btw I am thinking of upgrading to a better portable and one day getting an amp

The Grado SR-80 is very efficient and will work well and sound great even out of a weak portable. The SR-80 is considered to have a better bass-response than the SR-60, so it's probably worth the extra $10-20.

There is a large difference on the bass between the 60 and the 80 on my Neos Jukebox (60mw). I would definately go for the 80's.

Headroom is the only place that thinks the SR80's sound murky. I wish people would stop bringing that up!

If you don't care for much bass, then get the 60's. If you want bass then get the 80's.

If you can find a local store that carries Grados then I am sure that they will have both for you to listen to (assuming one isn't sold out). That's the best way to decide which one you want. Just don't start listening to the SR-225's or higher because, well, you might spend more money than you want to.

My philosophy about headfone-audiophilism is to have the BEST headphones at all times that you can afford.

With that logic, coupled by the fact that almost EVERY Grado user feels that going up the ladder is almost always going UP, I say get the 80s...

Think of how you feel now, if you go with the SR-60s, that feeling will not go away.

You're looking at a minimal (what, $20.00?) price difference. Go for the 80s, go with what you want. The $$ part of it and upgrade fever is just going to get worse, ask any of us.

I think you are right JMT, if I get the 60s im sure I will love them but I will always wish I got the 80s.....oh no, if im this bad now I cant imagine when im thinking about getting some rs-1s. lol who am I kidding id get em today if I had the cash

I agree completely with JMT.......Upgrado will probably get you soon anyway, so if you start with the SR-80s, that's one less rung to climb. The SR-80 is a great headphone.......get it and start listening to your music!

I just got 125's and I guess the fever hasn't really hit me yet... I'd kinda like to have some 325's, but, I don't really care that much right now.

I also have a feeling that I'm going to be one of those people that prefers the 325 over the RS-1, but who knows... as I haven't listened to either yet.

Oh yeah, get the 80's
