Can a CMOY power HD580's or 590's?

A CMOY can power HD-580 satisfactorily and 590 pretty well. You will not have the headroom that an amp with a bigger and more robust power supply will give you but hey.

It works and it sounds decent.

Cheers!

Well with my 497's I can get them about 4x louder than I would ever listen to them at. About 15-20% of max volume is my average, rather loud listening volume

So with 580+ headphones I'd be cranking it to achieve the same effect?

Yes, HD 580s are less sensitive than HD 497s.

So I hear the HD555's are perfect with a CMOY, would you recommend those over the 580's? It's just that the 580's are the best of yesteryear but only $30-40 more than the 555's, that's why I was considering them. What do you think?

Here's my setup:

Chaintech AV710 w/ high sample rate, etc...
Foobar2000 Kernel Streaming
eyevancsu CMOY
?headphones?

All with decent interconnects.

With Cmoy, HD555 may be a better choice. However, if you are planning to get more powerful amp in the future or tube amp, HD580 may be a better phone. For the overall sound quality, I would rate HD580 higher than HD555 (when it is sourced/driven properly).

Heh, I don't plan on going bigger anytime soon...this is for my work computer anyway, I don't want to invest hundreds

And searching the forums it seems that the 580/600/650 models all need some hefty amplification and a great source. I don't think I will be giving it that.

So last question...555 or 590? The 590's seem to be a bit of a person child, I see mixed reviews on them. The 555's have been considered almost as good as a 595. They're more or less the same price.

BTW I'm not a super audiophile so I'm sure I'll be happy with any of these, my 497's blew me away when I first got them and I was driving them off an nVidia Soundstorm w/ 128Kb MP3's

They are also the most I've ever spent on headphones (a whopping $55). I just want to get advice from those more experienced than I now that I'm toying with the semi-pro level ones.

There was one dude here that had both and even though the 590s were a smidge more detailed, he preferred the 555s. The 590s from what I hear tend to be harsh, more suited for classical. The 580s are more for classical as well...

I went from the 497s to the 555s as well and it was a huge jump. I can hear every little thing in songs, and the subtle synth work it some songs. They are also much higher fidelity. So just to get a little perspective on things here, the 555s may not be razor like the top notch phones but the are extremely detailed all the same.

Are you sure you don't want to pay a little more for the 595s? I guarantee you will still want to upgrade afterwards, it's always like that. Seriously...you'll just end up paying more money later...the 595s have 10% more performance than the 555 from what I gather.

The 595's are 10% more performance for $100 more dollars...and I probably won't even notice the 10%

Also they're out of stock everywhere.

I think the 555's are it! The 580/600/650's + sweet amp seem nice if I ever really get into it, but we'll see if I ever get into headphones that much (I doubt it really).

Thanks!

The HD 580 has a very different sound than the 555. Personally, I prefer the HD580 sound, its much more of a laid back/relaxed sound. But, the 555 might be just your cup o' tea.
