sorry is this is dumb, but what connector is that?

i'm going to buy an ipod video and i have a pa2v2 - do i need a connector like that?

Technically you do not need it since you could go out of the earphone plug to the amplifier of your choice. However if you do so you are amplifying the distortion and sonic characteristics of the iPod internal amplifier.

A much better solution is to get a dock to get a line out (bypasses the internal iPod amp) and then using a mini to mini IC you connect it to your amp. There are many choices available, some have a cable out others you use your own mini to mini. Examples are:

-Moon Audio has a few choices with various type of cables
-Turbo
-Audio Line Out
-Pocket Dock
-SIK
