After burning in the AKG K701s for about 300 hrs. now, I'm thinking they may be too small for my head. Too tight on top and takes me out of the music and into the problem with the cans.

I'm thinking there cannot be much remedy for this, unless you guys know something I don't(which very easily could be).

I'm bummed because I really like them more than my Senn 600s which are way more comfortable.

I'm sure I'm not the only one hear with a big head(I'm talking about physical dimensions now)?

Any ideas for a large head headphones to use with my RSA "Raptor" Benchmark Dac1 combo? I'm thinking something no more than $600 if I can, maybe a little more.

A-T's can accommodate absolutely massive heads

Agree. AT cans fit the largest of head. In fact, small head might not fit that well.

Beyers might also work. My DT770s accommodate my fairly large head pretty well.

My 'Phones: AD2K, ES7, K701, MS2i

AD2K + K701 needs little stretching (put it over the pillows and leave it overnight; for K701s, the little headphone stand that comes with works as well) MS2i are uncomfortable no matter what I do. ES7s are just fine.

If you're planning to get a dedicated home amp (I personly don't use portables at home) I recommend AD2K. Absolutely wonderful all-rounder IMO.

As for discomfort on the top of your head - I recommend wearing K701s little deeper, bit more toward your nose. And wearing it for a while makes headband little softer.

I've got a big head and don't really have any problems with most headphones, but I don't listen to the same pair day in and day out. If they're at all uncomfortable (clamping), in most cases you can stretch them out pretty easily. I do this with Sennheiser cans before putting them on each time, kind of bouncing them out a little. That seems to help.

I suppose I'll pickup a pair of ATs to try. I was thinking I'd wait until CamJam to try some others on, but then again it seems lots of cans feel ok initially. It's the hanging out with awhile that is the true test.

The "Raptor" is a dedicated home amp.

Do I have a big head?
I don't know, but I noticed that with many of the headphones I tried, they clamp a lot.
But like others have said, the AT support system is very easy with large heads, and the W5000 is very loose fitting for most people, including me.

$600 should make them fit in your price range, I've seen them go as low as $550 + shipping, but $600 or so is probably the norm.

My SR225 are great for my huge head, and the Equation Audio RP21 are pretty good too. I did have to bend them outwards to lessen the clamping though.

Audio Technicas are GREAT for big heads like us

w5000 - I'm guessing that raptor will be ok with them but DAC1 is big NO with w5000 - You'll need warmer source or atleast neutral - for me benchmark is one of the brightest sources

I thought the Beyer 880, 990 ('05 editions) would fit my head better than say the Senn HD-650. So I started there.

Surprisingly, they aren't great for TALL heads (coneheads?

). They would always hurt the top of my head.

I eventually got the HD-650, worried that they would be too small. Upon massaging and bending the METAL bars out a bit (note: do not bend the plastic), I find they fit great. I even have about three more clicks to pull out on each side.

Again, I was very worried after reading about many people having to stretch their HD-650s on boxes and such, but tweaking the metal did the job for me.

YMMV, of course.

I think Grados fit even for most gigantic coneheads AND wearing a top hat! =)
I have bigger than average head and headband is actually little too long for perfect fit. Or maybe my ears are positioned on top of my head?
