Cable excess solutions? (eg. spool?)

Can anyone recommend a solution (other than buying new headphones or replacing the cable) for conveniently shortening a long headphone cable?

This is particularly for my SR80s when in portable use. Its quite annoying and messy when I have to dig through a mess of wires in my pocket to get to my player.

I'm thinking of a product that is a container with a rotating spool inside that I can thumb-rotate to gather the excess cable inside.

Thanks.

It may look nerdy but.....

I used to spool the excess cable from my headphones into a loop that was about at the same level as my waist. I then held the loop together using a couple of pieces of double-sided velcro that some people use for computer cord management. This spool was then clipped to my pant's belt clip using a very small caribiner (I did this to prevent the weight from the coil tugging down on the headphones).

It worked quite nicely and I used this method for a good couple of years. Eventually though, I just started recabling my headphones with shorter lengths of cable.

HA, I pondered this very problem last night when I went to walk my dog.

What I did? It's hard to explain, and pardon the crappy picture from my phone.

I took a sweat wristband and bundled it into the sweatband on my amp. I left enough length for it to be in my jacket pocket.

If you have a sweatband, it's a free solution. It also protects your amp under regular usage. Cheap to go buy a generic one too.

Sounds like your best bet it to re-terminate your head phones.

I don't really want to do this. But there are some good suggestions above. The fishy idea is cool but I'll look downright dumb with one of those things. But that product gives me an idea for a project that I'll soon embark on.

This is great. Though things don't loosen/slip while your on the move?

Considering the "fishy" thing on ebay and the smartwrap, and along the same lines; (here's a silly thought) - use a sponge. They're available in a variety of sizes and densitys. Buy one of the appropriate size, trim it (to shape if needed), and notch the ends - like the smartwrap, but for a thicker cable. It's cheap and should work. obviously there are more elegant and expensive solutions - but this kludge should work.

Actually, they don't. I guess it's cause the cables against the metal grip enough not to slip around so long as you give enough slack to begin with.

I've been doing this every time I went to walk my dog his normal 1 mile route, and it works beautifully. Cheap, easy and simple enough.
