Looking specifically at your link, its MASSIVE overkill.  You have zero need for an i7 processor for a start, massive expense and huge overkill a simple i3 will be more than enough and will be MUCH cheaper, also consider AMD chipset for further cost reduction.  Next is the RAM is probably overkill also, 4gb of ram should be plenty.  Instead of wasting the money on the processor and ram increase the budget for more storage space on the SSD or add to your DAC budget.  Just my opinion however.  This is JUST a storage device/player so unless you plan to store other media types outside music you should be fine.  Just my opinion however.

My brother has a system similar to this running linux and cost him about $500 all told.

Thanks. My feeling as well. The CAPS Zuma does look good but costs a lot more just to look good.

I agree with the Core i7 being overkill, etc.

But what about the fancy $300 USB3 card? And the special picoPSU?

I can perhaps understand the USB card but wouldn't a traditional (but fanless) PSU be good enough? Or does it help the remove the power from the box for "audiophile" purposes?

A fanless system I can also understand.

Not really necessary. I've seen guys building their CAPS without the USB3 card.
