I never actually knew that until I ran into this website. While I haven't read the entire site yet, I found "Chapter 4: Research the dealer's cost and make your offer" to be very interesting and I will be doing all the math before I buy a new car.

I've also been told to wait until the end of the year when they are bringing in the new model cars and need to get the older models off the lot to make room. But because you're basically buying the cars that no one else wants a lot of this type of car shopping depends on luck and patiences.

i am surprised how people here say not to get a warranty, i think that's the dumbest ****ing thing i heard today (i worked with drunks all day for comparison).

I understand Warranty's are designed so you will never use them of course they are, why would they sell them?

is health insurance or car insurance designed to be used? no..

but what if you car is past its factory Warranty? what if someone hits you? what if you get into a serious accident and need medical?

how the hell do you people say not to get an extended warranty? do you have any clue what a typical visit out of warranty costs?

now all cars are different and the service from each maker costs different but every car i owned the Warranty has paid for itself in the first year...every car! if there is a Deductible so what, would you rather Pay $1000+ or the deductible?

you people do understand a car is the second most costly purchase someone takes rite? are you people that cheap and into driving the dealer down that far?

Well, calling people who do not buy an extended warranty dumb is rude & ignorant. I bought Honda Civic and I refused to buy the extended warranty. Knowing Honda reputation, IMHO extended warranty is not worth it. It's something else to think about if I bought Ford or Audi

There are also people who buy car and use it for 3-5 years, extended warranty in this case is also useless.

Another consideration, why do you have the need to buy extended warranty which will kick it on another 3 years now, pay interest on it (if you put it under your financing) and lost investment opportunity on that money. You can buy that extended warranty when you feel you'll need it near the expiration of your original warranty.

IME, if you bought a new car, during the original warranty period, you'll know whether you'll need to get extended warranty or not. Used car, that's different teritory since it will be difficult to learn about that car's history.

Since OP is considering a New Toyota, IME, extended warranty is not worth it.

Usually an extended warranty can be purchased after the initial purchase is mase and before the original warranty expires. In some cases an extended warranty may be worth the money but I wouldn't purchase one with a new car. Who's to say I'm going to keep my car for more than four years (or however long your warranty may last)?

Those extended warranties are from the dealer. They ADD the warranty onto your existing. They make full profit off of those most times because people already get a factory warranty, and typically, if nothing happens during the factory warranty period, it is unlikely to happen afterwards. Also, the average person doesn't quite keep there vehicle for 100,000 miles anymore. And those warranties also do not cover the same things the factory warranties do. Your new vehicle comes with a warranty, do not buy the extended warranty unless you like throwing money away.

Use a website like Edmunds to help you find out what the car you are looking at is going for in your city. If the car has an MSRP of $20,000, and the average selling price is $17,500, be happy with that price (at the end, its a matter of whether or not you are happy with what you got).

If the car you are looking at has dealer added options (there will be a secondary sticker next to the main window sticker), with stuff like "wood grain dash" and "floor mats" and other stuff like that, even if you want it, act like you don't. These accessories are just another source of decent revenue to sucker you into.

Main thing to realize is that they want to sell you a car, plain and simple.

I went to buy a new van with my parents, they needed some help with this. We had a trade in, my 2002 Civic. I went to 3 dealerships with my car to see what it was worth, cross checking with KBB.com and NADA. $9000 was probably the BEST trade in price I was going to get since it had significant hail damage to the body. I got a price quote from 3 dealers for the VAN, its an 07 Odyssey EX, $29,500 MSRP, best price I got from those 3 other dealerships was $26,500 for the van. I walked into the 4th dealership, handed a random sales person the keys to my Civic. Told him to pull up the Nimbus Grey Odyssey EX (I already circled the lot, they had 2), and told him that he needs to be at $16,000 out the door on the Odyssey after trade in. He was stunned for a second, but got on it. After 15 minutes, he comes up to me and tells me we have a deal. Within an hour of being at the dealership, on a Saturday, we were out the door with a new van.

If you show weakness, they will feed off of that.

edmunds.com or possibly some other sites you can find out whether the dealer gets any cash back or dealer cash incentives from the auto maker, which lowers their "invoice pricing"....

no disagreement here
