What's everyone's views on buying a no-name mp3 player?

My friend just bought one recently from one of those cheap online stores and when I tried listening to it, it had great sound! I'd say the Cowon that I bought for triple the price is still better than it, but it's very close in reproducing both the treble, bass, and the mid range audio.

This made me feel like going online and buying a cheap mp3 player - I've actually been eyeing on one available at this website: http://www.emvee.ca/ with 2Gb and 2.5in LCD screen for less than $69 shipped. Thing is, this isn't the one my friend got, and I don't know if they're consistent in sound quality. What's everyone's thoughts about this? Do I have anything to lose for buying a 2GB MP3 Player with 2.5" LCD at less than $69 all in?

agreed. I picked up a Meizu 8GB music card and it's been a learning experience. Getting the player to display menus in English, EAC, Lame, FLAC, trying to get the songs to play in track order. It's been a lot of work and I'm not there yet.

Itunes may lock you in to doing things their way, but at least it is easy and quick to get it up and going.

Well, which brand did your friend buy? Just saying that they aren't the same doesn't mean much.

Fry's has a 2GB PQI for $46 w/ $7 MIR. I have no idea how it sounds.

When you say "no-name" do you mean a name that no one here has heard of yet, or literally there is no label on the player?

If it's the latter I be a little more careful. If it's the former than I say go for it. How are we ever going to discover new brands if we never try anything different? If all of us only bought players with big names we would all be listening to iPods.

Just remember to come back with a review so that we may all benefit from your wallet... er, I mean experience.

the problem is that you have kmart or tesco or carrefur going to a chinese maker and saying "i want 100,000 1gb players with a small lcd screen and for $10 each to sell for 30 in my supermaket"

so you get the cheapest codec chips on the market, 2nd rate flash member, cheap plastic casing, bad soldering,

you can be picking up the next meizu, or the next inovix (crud players).
but mostly, you will be buying a player designed to be cheap above everything else,

True enough, I didn't even mention that its sound quality is great for such a small unit. It had no problems driving D2000s or a UE9.

They must teach their children how to tweak them at an early age in school and I must need remedial help.

How is the Nano just "a few bucks more"?

forget sound quality
if u get a no name it will probably not be too durable, and die sooner than u'd want, or at min. the headphone jack will stop working in one ear.

so i wouldn't recommend it
plus, like someone else said, at $70 its not a bargain

oh, i've seen 1gig nanos many for under $60 on this forum or ebay, i've seen 2gig nanos for $70-80 in general, here or ebay

Been itching to try this one out, personally.

If you do take take the plunge, remember that the quality control for some no name brands is relatively lackluster. It's usually a gamble with them more than anything. That's why I recommend buying it directly from Amazon, Newegg and other stores with a nonrestrictive return policy.
