Buy "OSSIC X" or not?
Feb 16, 2018 at 11:03 AM Post #226 of 301
Hi there!

The ideal case is taking the positional audio data directly from the game, with the X being able to render the highest resolution of audio output the game is able to output. Some games have down-mixed to stereo for the average headphone but usually have an option for higher-level playback such as surround with height or ambisonics, which the X can render.
  • Some games will automatically default to the highest spatial resolution and not provide access to settings. For these games, make sure to have the OSSIC X selected as the audio output device before opening the game.
  • For other games, go into the audio settings, turn off any "Headphone" modes, and select the highest Speaker configuration available.
If the game engine doesn't output ambisonic format, the OSSIC X can render a multi-channel mix of any number of discreet speaker locations provided by the game beyond stereo.

When it VR the OSSIC X defers to the head-tracking of the HMD, as to not overlap.

Regarding amplifiers: the OSSIC X does all amplification and digital signal processing on board the device so we recommend not connecting through an external amp, however our developers in the field may have experience testing this live.

Thank you!
So will there be an interface that allows us to reposition virtualized speakers or is that something the OSSIC X does on it's own (hardcoded)based on the source ?

Found this Ossic email in my box today:

StartEngine Campaign

“We invite you to partner with us on this next phase of our journey as we bring 3D audio to the world. As an early investor and evangelist, you’ll play a crucial role in bringing this technology to life and share in our success.

Together, we can truly change the future of audio.

Is this a joke? We have have nothing in our hands besides your obvious proof of lacking communication skills and not taking backers seriously.

You get trust by building trust.

You promised me end of April 2016 to send me in August 2016 a prototype. You delivered nothing! And your communication with me was non existent.

In fact your communication was so bad that you paid 3/4 of the 1000 US Dollar investment in your business back. Sorry, but I pass on this one.

The new offering has forced Ossic into a level of transparency that must be very uncomfortable for them:

Risks of Borrowing. We have outstanding convertible notes in the amount of $2,551,254.78, which convert automatically into preferred stock upon the completion of a preferred financing in the minimum amount of $1,000,000. If we are unable to raise $1,000,000 in this Offering, those notes will become due and payable in August 2018. We also have outstanding secured loans in the amount of $500,000 owed to Silicon Valley Bank, which are secured by our assets. A default on such loan could result in the foreclosure on our assets. In addition, we have issued Subordinated Promissory Notes in the aggregate principal amount of $455,000 that accrue interest at 5% per annum and are due and payable on the earlier of (i) August 24, 2018, (ii) a change in control, or (iii) the closing of a financing transaction in the aggregate gross amount of at least $5,000,000.

These numbers are not pretty, and what is worse the key date is August, which leads me to suspect that the delivery of product is being consciously delayed so that stocks can count as an asset should the company become insolvent. The obvious way to raise money right now is to issue the product and start recouping from sales; the fact that they still don't have a retail date is kind of ominous at this point.

Hi everyone!

I'm not able to answer questions regarding the campaign here, but can answer other questions and am happy to continue to participate in the forum.

Hi Reiner,

I can understand your frustration with the delays. The core technology has indeed taken us a bit longer than we anticipated to develop and many new improvements have been made to both the hardware and the software – including the addition of the 32-core processor onboard the headphone in order to handle mobile processing. Due to several confidentiality agreements we can't mention every improvement, however we have publicly updated all backers both on our website and our Kickstarter page on a monthly basis with as much information as we can say without compromising anything to competitors. We are a small startup, and developing a sophisticated technology that has never been done before takes time. I admit that it has not been easy to have to push back the delivery date for so many active and eager supporters, but if the result is a better product then we have to continue to focus on one thing – getting it done.

To that note, there has been quite a lot of momentum in the past several months with the developer unit shipment and subsequent software releases, and we're excited for what is next. Due to certain restrictions I am not able to comment directly on the details of the StartEngine campaign on this forum, but you are welcome to explore the full campaign page to learn more.

Hi everyone!
Hi Reiner,
I can understand your frustration with the delays.

Can you?
You support something with 1000 Dollar and the promise that you will be part of the development and you will receive one of the prototypes , which existed, 4 months later.
All the points you mentioned have nothing to do with the core problem. I was not expecting to get the final unit, I was expecting to get a prototype. After you did not deliver the prototype in August 2016 you promised December 2016. And you know how that went. You delivered in January 2018!
So if you want to participate in this thread, please answer the obvious question! Why did you not deliver the promised existing prototype?
Best, Reiner

Just looks bad. Thanks for digging deeper.

Wow this got ugly fast. I'm still really interested in the final product and while I don't have money invested in the campaign, there are some definitely concerning points raised here. I Hope they can deliver on the final product and get the business right. Especially the customer service portion. I take this forum communication as a step in the right direction.

I know startup life very well and work in one right now. I honestly don't expect we'll learn about the twists and turns along the way because those stories generally involve names and sometimes dead bodies (who no longer work at said endeavor).

Anyway; I do have a technical question:

Can you please elaborate on the driver type? I imagine it's conventional with processing making the sound curve what it is.

I'd love to see a "Pro" release with the ORA GrapheneQ drivers which could really kick this design into audio overdrive.

Agreed, I hope they can right the course, but I think until the product starts actually selling or they receive another round of funding the situations certainly seems grim.

It will be interesting to see whether Audeze can deliver their Mobius before the Ossic X ships. The fact that Audeze are listing a June delivery date and have already provided assessment prototypes to Jude suggests that Ossic may be about to lose first mover advantage in a pretty decisive way.

Yup. The Audeze is going to steal some thunder, I imagine. I do still wonder if an array of drivers might be better for localized sound and the OSSIC might have better algorithms but really no one will know for a while.
