Buy HD-495's, or mod the living hell out of my SR-60's? If so, HOW?

Hi! I have DT831's, a Total Airhead, a SL-CT470, KSC-35's, SR-60's, KSC-50's, and MDR-EX70LP's...
However, my SR-60's have a....mod of necessity. They have a 1/4th inch jack on them. Recently, the Radio Shack 1/4th to 1/8th inch adaptor broke, and I dont wanna buy a new one, because the RS one, well, sucks, and the Grado one is expensive. Besides, I have my DT831's...

HOWEVER... After reading these grado mods, I got inspired! Maybe I can mod the hell out of my grado's, so they will be fun, and possible to use again!!

BUT! The Sennheiser HD495's are $52, and I can get them for $61 total, shipped. BUT, my CT470 probably isn't enough to power em, and I dont wanna bring my Total Airhead to school.... so, I'm thinking of getting a CD3904....

Now, this big huge spree of buying is something I see ahead of me...and, to tell you the truth, I'm only "so-so" about it.

Maybe I can get some use out of my SR-60's, for a LOT less price, by modding them?

Here are my ideas for what I might wanna do... my main problems are that I dont have the first idea of how to start, or what supplies I would need, or ANYTHING!

(copied from another post)

Alright....lessee.... what mods do *I* wanna do to my 60's?
Replace the pads with something more comfy...maybe even bassier.....what, that would be circumsock mod? Maybe get the Radio Shack pads, and cut those up... how do you choose which pads to use? I want to make them: less bright, maybe more detailed (certainly not LESS!), maybe more bassy, maybe bigger soundstage, maybe better for gaming, definitely more comfy. What pads/mods would do a goodly number of those? Yea, I gotta replace my comfy pads; they smell like smoke from the last owner! Even AFTER Febreeze, LOL! I only have comfy pads, would I need to buy others for any of these mods? the circumsock? What type of sock? What thickness?

Maybe even replace that plastic mesh with some of the other mesh talked about in the online mods.... what would work with the 60's?

Oh yea, i will DEFINITELY *HAVE* to get rid of the Grattle! GRR!!!! So, I could do that when I do the others?

Maybe replace the headband with that more comfy one..... that senn 490 one, maybe? Is there something like that, but that folds?

ooo, lessee..... take the button off, sand the "prestige series and "grado labs" thingy down.... is there a way to sand down the parts of the headphone that hold the whole driver ensemble, so they aren't so pointy? Because pointy is bad....

Um, the resistances on the two antennae isn't the same..... one is easier to move than the other....how do I make them the same? Here's the catch, I like the harder to move one better....

I might wanna try that smaller-than-mini jack on each driver.... but where would I get the stuff to do that? of course, they would all have to be gold plated, LOL! Then, I'd want to replace the cord with something smaller, thinner, slightly easier to bend, and that ends in a 1/8th L jack.... (they now end in 1/4" grrr....I lost the adapter, too! ACK! I haven't listened to my SR-60's in soooo long because of that!) Who had that thread where one guy replaced the cord with a yellow one, and then a good, black one? Of course, I want to make these an L-shaped 1/8th inch plug.... how do I do that? Does anyone have the link to any of these cord mods? that page with the guy who did the yellow cord, then the black one seemed to be teh exact right thickness!!

Any ideas/suggestions? I am starting from 'mostly stock' SR-60's (except for that 1/4" plug, which I HATE!), with no DIY knowledge! What would I need to DO this stuff? And which of the mods where I don't know how to achieve my goal should I do?

my advice would be to get the bowl pads from headroom, then do the sock mod. the details about how I do the sock mod are in the headwize grado mod writeup.

Just put a quarter-sized hole in the comfy pads. Or don't.

My suggestion, would be to mod the SR-60's...destroy them and add them to the butterknife victim's list. Than after realizing you have destroyed them, buy some HD495's. Ok I don't suggest that really...but it'd be funny if it did turn out that way.

I will NEVER take a butterknife to these!

That's why I need some incredible details on the tools I will need, the stuff I will have to buy, and how to do the specific mods I want, LOL!

yeah not much of a help, but I just sell stuff that doesn't get much use and buy newer and better stuff. like selling five old CDs to buy a new one. maybe sell the sr60, and add that to the 60 the 495 is gonna cost and get a sr80. unless you prefer the Senn sound ofcourse. but if it's not too good without an amp, and you already have 831's, why get the 495?

if you don't mind killing them in the process, take em apart. metal grilles should be cool. I wouldn't sand em down, I like the "Grado Labs" and the little disc, but thats me. you'll get dust everywhere too.

thinner pads is good. little less comfy but better sounding, not sure what it'll do with the bass tho.

you might even be able to completely replace the cable. that would be nice for portability, and you can put a little plug on it.

I can't sell them, cause they are my dads, and they ARE great sounding with my CT470, better than my KSC's are.... however, they are too inconvenient/dont have enough features for me to use them again (remember, 1/4th jack, all that jazz....). So, I want to mod them to get good features!

Yes.... I intend to completely replace the cable....

didn't that get through? I know exactly WHAT I want to do, just not HOW to do it, or what tools I will need.....

How bout if all the tools needed cost more than the Grado adapter? LOL.

Or how about the fact that poorly done mods would be much worse in sound degradation than a cheap RS adapter ever would?

Ah, but the gains I would reap from doing the mods, in both experience and comfort and coolness and portability and utility of the headphones would be worth it!

And remember, this is instead of getting, say, the HD495's + CD3904, LOL!

And i dont wanna do the mods poorly, thats why I want a WHOLE LOT of advice, and advice on the best tools, and such....

besides, we intended to mod them a little (change 1/4 to 1/8; dad would show me how to do that, he is good at this stuff), and I decided, "why not mod them a lot?"

And I dont *want* the adaptor. It is a crappy product. It broke my amp, I dont want it to break my PCDP too!
