"Bump" Definition?

its just something to post to "bump" your thread back up to the top of the list

Again, I feel somewhat dense. What purpose does it serve, i.e., what is to be gained by "bumping" your thread to the top of the list -- and what list? Doesn't any new posting in the same thread accomplish the same thing?

After a day or so, more threads get created and push your thread down where no one sees it. You bump up the thread to make it go to the front page/ top of the list where it is most visible to members so they can post to it.
