Well, all my components except for my av123 speakers have arrived. As I mentioned before, I ordered an x-cs for my center and a pair of x-mtm's for my mains and according to av123's website, I won't see these bad boys until the middle of next month. Its really frustrating to pay so much for speakers and have to wait so long to get them. Oh well, this whole home theater rig is a birthday present to myself and my birthday isnt until Aug 31st, so I guess it kind of works out.
After I got home from work today, I was determined to go ahead and get the speaker cables run for my surround speakers...what a job. I started off by cutting a hole big enough for a 3 gang junction box in my wall. Then I went up into the attic and drilled through the header and tried to fish the first cable down the wall. no dice
I tried to use a stud finder to see if I could tell what was blocking my cable route, but I couldnt get a clear reading, so I resorted to some rather primative tactics. I basically took a finish nail and started nailing holes into my wall near the obstruction in a grid-like pattern. When I hit wood behind the drywall, I drew a circle around the nailhole. After about 15 or 20 tiny little holes in my wall, I began to see exactly where the obstruction was. I then cut away the drywall around the obstruction and used an angle grinder to make a notch in the offending stud so that I could route my cables down to the junction box for my master wall plate.
I then began running the speaker cables for each of my 4 surround speakers. 4 hours later I was done
I still haven't actually installed my ceiling speakers yet; I'll get to that tomorrow. My main goal for tonight was to run the wires in the attic while it was cool during the night. I would have burned up had I tried to do this job during the day.
Here's some pics:
By the way, my wife hates the color of our living room, so she was cool with my pseudo destruction of the wall. I'll patch it up and nobody will ever know I was even in there.
I haven't hooked up my receiver yet. I am really tempted to hook it up and use my left and right surround speakers as my mains and my rear speakers as my temporary surrounds...I wonder what that would sound like.
More updates to come.
