Hey Guys

I just finished having a blast at the Ottawa Head-Fi meet and it made me realize how lacking my sources are. I am currently using a Pany RP62 DVD player for listening to music through my Onkyo 575x receiver and Studiolabs speakers and through my headphones (HD580 & K401).

I know the amp is not the best for speakers but I have a CMOY and am working on putting a Meta/Mint together and looking at getting an ASL OTL Mark2 so I am covered on the amp end of things...

I listened to CD players at the meet and although I would love to plop down thousands of dollars on a redbook only CD player I would much rather have a DVD/SACD/CD player so that I can use it to watch movies and play CDs. I would also love to listen to multichannel music with my home theatre since I love the surround sound feeling.

From doing a little bit of reading I see that the choices for SACD are:
Sony SCD-C222ES
Sony NS500V
Philips 963SA
any others?

Does anyone know where I can get these in canada?
I dont think the sony's are available from Sony Canada the cheapest SACD player is the DVPNS755V for $499CDN. Is this similar/as good as the NS500V?

and I have no idea where to get philips stuff...is there an online site that sells philips in/to Canada? or a store like futureshop?, bestbuy?

I'm not 100% ready to buy just yet as I am about to purchase a turntable but I would like to check out my options...

[edit] Oops forgot to post a budget...I can get an entry level CD player such as the Cambridge 500SE, the Shanling S100 etc for 600 CDN without much trouble so I figure that would be about my limit..

thanks all

You are right, this is hard to find GOOD stuff in Canada. Even you can find them, they will sell it at a unreasonable price. Therefore, I buy most of my "High Tech" stuff online. Also, Canadian dollar exchange rate is pretty good right now, therefore I prefer you buy your SACD player online. You can also find a used SACD player in this forum. (such as: Sony NS500V for around $130 - $150)

I hope it will help!

I was told that they may carry the philips players

Alternatively, which online stores have you bought from? that dont charge an arm and a leg on shipping to canada. Any that you recommend?

thanks

Yeah, I gave up years ago trying to find a store that sells to customers outside of US. Once credit fraud started, almost all of them switched to accepting US-issued CC's only. It would be fairly easy for them to add online verification of Canadian-issued cards too but almost all of them don't bother.

Though in general prices here aren't that bad, considering the advantages of buying from a local, reputable store which allow no-hassle refunds and straightforward warranties. For computer hardware prices are pretty much on par with lowest prices from US online stores anyway.

So if you know of any stores that ship to the north... That link for 963 is very useful, as Philips does not sell any commercial electronics in Canada. They are simply do not have coverage for this market at all. They sell a limited subset of their full product range. So 963 cannot be had here for any price.

I had check with 2 BEST BUY stores in Toronto. But they only carry some low class SACD player. I asked the sales about SACD player, however, they don't even know WHAT is SACD!!!!

Anyway, just forget to buy SACD player in local store, to check online and buy from there. You can also check J&R, they sell 963SA for $360.

I hope this information will help.
