Ahh well... someone will always manage to go cheaper

.

I can guess probably the cheapest possible setup that includes a separate amp: $5 vintage PCDP line out, self-built CMOY in mint tin ($25), KSC-35 from eBay ($20)... I wonder if anyone can beat $50.

I am pretty sure someone will be at least around $50, probably a DIY. By the way, you forgot the connectors. Maybe $10 more?

How about this vintage PCDP ($5-10 purchased in a thrift store) plus MX400s ($7) and a cmoy made from parts from a surplus store (maybe $25). Call it $37. Should sound... well... acceptable depending on how good of deals you can find.

Can't beat $50, but I'm digging my work rig these days:

Office PC (free)
Onkyo UD-5 ($20 on clearance at Fry's)
Audio Alchemy DDE 1.1 ($50...but actually free after I sold the jitter reduction device that came with it)
Monster Cable Interlink 400 Mk II (free with purchase of another DAC that I've since sold)
DIY C-Moy ($50...$100 if you count the tools I had to buy to build it)
HD-201s ($25...could be considered free since they were a Christmas present)

So...$70 - $195 total depending on how you slice it, but regardless it's an incredible sounding set-up for <$200. Definitely gets a lot more mileage than my home system.

fewtch, did you ever land yourself the 465? One went for $13 on ebay yesterday

I saw that... passed on it though. There was another one that went for ~$20 + S/H. Thats a great PCDP. I like the line outs on a lot of the sony's I've heard. They are pretty neutral, open and spatious, while not imposing much signature of their own. Got another PCDP coming in the next couple days.

I guess mine is about as budget as it gets...

But that was until her maintenance bills came in

I wish my girlfriend looked like that...doesnt need to have the voice...just the looks...voice is secondary...

but being realistic - D-25/D-303 -> T-Amp -> K1000 is pretty darn budget-fi until you factor in the K1000. I got a good deal on mine so it is still budget-fi in every way
