okay... so i have a NAD 3020 which makes a sort of nasty clipping sound all of the time. Without any electronic testing equipment... how can I tell if it is the preamp or power amp? I don't have a preamp or power amp to be able to tell though. The headphone jack has this same clipping sound, so it makes me think the preamp is messed up... what do you guys think??

I have the schematics for my HK receiver and the headphones are driven by the power amp. Do you happen to have schematics?

In this case, the headphone jack is tied to the power amp outputs via a resistor and switching jack. Try listening to the preamp outs (use a tape deck or similar to monitor it), as well as hooking up a cd player to the poweramp ins, to see if you get distortion in either case.
