I would love the Sony V6 a lot more if its soundstage wasn't about two inches wide.

Can you guys help me brainstorm some way of broadening the soundstage on these phones? At first I considered crossfeed/DSP, but in my experience those applications actually narrow the left-right stage, while increasing depth and vertical stage. I know that one aspect of soundstage width is the distance of the drivers from the ears (very close in the V6, as I recall), so I wonder if thickening the pads would make a slightly wider stage? I would experiment myself, but I don't currently have a V6 to play with. Anyone out there feeling clever?

The crossfeed options vary quite a bit and their impact seems to have different affects on the soundstage. For awhile I used the Canz3D VST plugin with Audio Hijack Pro (Mac only progs) and with its 25 adjustments there was a lot of play with soundstage. Hardware choices are more limiting, but their are still options that play differently.

Honestly though, the only solution I've found is a bottle of wine. I swear by two and a half - three glasses, things open up quite a bit on the V6's.

The only DSP options I currently have are the ones I can use via Silent Cinema on my Yamaha receiver. These are pretty cool, though I have yet to try most of them with headphones. ProLogic II sounds, well, pretty much like it does with speakers -- a warm coloration, emphasis on center channel, relatively narrow right-left stage, increased sense of depth.

Maybe I should try "70-mm Spectacular" with the V6....

If you are not using an amp, you can try one to examine if it is to your taste..

I tried my V6 on a Meta, and it opened up a bit.

If you have access to a parametric EQ, try turning down the upper mids, I forget exactly what frequency. The boosted mid to upper mids (as opposed to recessed as some used to say, I see fewer comments on that now

) probably close up the soundstage.
