This can't be happening to me. I just got my E4's today, and put the foamies on immediatly, but when I raise the volume on bass tracks, the right ear starts crackling. Is this normal for this model, or is something wrong with the driver? I have my MP3's normalized to 92db with MP3gain, playing through an X5L.

Anybody else have the cracking problem at higher volumes?

I usually mp3gain to 89db, but that shouldn't make a difference with the
output from your phones. Try another set of cans and see if the crackling
still exists. See if it exists in all music, just to make sure it's not the source.

If your cans are crackling, you've got a dud set. I don't recall reading about
this problem in the forums, but that doesn't mean anything by itself. I'd say
contact Shure and they should take care of you without any issues. Their
support has been reported on here to be very good, and very happy to make
sure that the customer is happy.

If you bought them locally, you could try just returning for a new pair. You
could also return to an online vendor, but if you're going to ship, you might
as well go with the manufactuer.

good luck

They could be defective. Could you try changing the nozzle with one of the spares and see if that fixes the problem?

I had a similar problem, although mine was solved by turning the volume down as well as the bass. My Iriver was the problem... when it got to loud volumes ( I was testing them!) and the bass was up as well they would crackle and distort, even if I turned the volume down low. Mine was fixed my turning it on and off a few times and not putting the bass up too high.

So my advice is to try a different source first. If it still does it then contact Shure about the problem.

No, I was running them straight out of my X5L, then I added the SR-71 from the line out, and finally I switched to my audigy 4 headphone jack. They all produce the crackling up out of the right ear. I want everyone to know that these are very high volumes that I am using. Still, I shouldn't have the problem. The least should be audible distortion, no!

Sounds like its time to talk to Shure then. I think nearly Everyone finds their service first rate. Let us know how you get on.

That's not right. I had mine for weeks and I played them at different volume levels with no crackling. I even let them burn in for 20 hours with very high volume levels. I think you may have a lemon. Get them replaced or return them. You could still get the E5 you like.
