RIAA to "sue thousands"

They're grasping at straws. Very, very dangerous and very, very serious straws. Say what you will about file-trading and P2P apps, it's here to stay. Suing the living daylights out of your customers is not good business sense.

I ask my fellow Head-Fi members to join me in a boycott of the Record Industry Association of America. It's not very hard for me (I can count the number of mass-market albums I've purchased on one hand

) but I ask the rest of you to do what you can to refrain from putting money in their pockets. This is the only way they can be stopped. In America, land of the almighty dollar, your wallet is your best way of getting your point across. So do something and don't stand idle while this is happening.

That's the last ****ing straw man...I'm with you. The Mars Volta CD will be my last...then I'll just buy used.

I hate the RIAA...

I'm with you... While I may give in to weakness now and again, I'm going to seriously cut my buying.

I rarely buy big RIAA albums....Radiohead being the last one I picked up. I try to stick to underground bands or Jazz and Classical albums. All of my Electronica albums are non-RIAA records. I was really stung when I came home and realized the Radiohead album was copy protected. I was very very close to bringing it back.

Heh, instead I just made a copy and brought it to the store I purchased the cd from and gave it to the manager. She spun that one any time she HAD to play Radiohead. It made me smile lots.

although this is a great idea, i think it will be very hard for most people to work with. i am a big fan of independent artists and labels, but i do own plenty of albums from small-time artists that are on some of the big labels.

i mean look at the list of labels who are members of the riaa: http://www.riaa.com/about/members/default.asp

the list is gigantic and swooping, and if you think that you're in the clear because you only listen to classical and jazz recordings, you are in correct. it's really sad to see that the riaa has come to this, but i don't see anybody or anything stopping them anytime soon.

Hey! This thread sucks!

Though I disagree with much of whatever ********* crap the RIAA is doing, I don’t think a boycott will have much if any effect on either the likelihood of purchasing more mainstream CDs or further action by the RIAA themselves.

What puzzles me though...is how inde labels sell their discs for equal to or more than RIAA albums. I understand small distribution numbers which would increase the cost, but it seems to me that they are charging what the RIAA is charging or more because they CAN and will follow suit making as much money as possible.

Will a big artist go to an inde label and sacrifice the benefits of hte RIAA and still sell the cd's at the same cost to the consumer? Not likely, at least not new artists. Once an artist is established though...retaining the rights to their music and making more than $1 off a cd is obviously worth while. I just wish ALL labels cut the prices.

what the ****...? that's it for me; even if it doesn't have any effect, i'm going to buy used as often as possible from now on. it's been a year or so since i've downloaded anything from kazaa, but for them to do this after decades of price fixing is absolutely ridiculous.

I love trading cd's at used shops but what really pisses me off, at least lately, is that the cost of used cd's seems to now match what many cd's at Best Buy can be hand (at least here in Ottawa).

If I'm gonna drop $15 for a disc I'll take the new one thanks. Nothing pisses me off more than a USED store making even more than the RIAA.

"My disc is only worth 2-4 bucks to you but you will turn around and sell it for 14-17? Heh...whatever dude."

And what is wrong with the RIAA protecting it's music from being stolen? You guys want everything for free or what?

Sheesh...

Of course, the best place is a local, independent used CD shop. I like to support those at every chance I get. Small record stores with knowledgeable staff are falling to the wayside as places like Best Buy are able to offer new CDs for ultra-cheap prices.

If you live in San Francisco (or near) and want to visit what's probably my favorite record store (very neat selection, very, very knowledgeable staff, not-so-great prices but sometimes great used discs) try Aquarius Records. It's on Valencia -- at 18th? -- or something? -- I love that store. I wish I had one like it closer to home.
