Hey Everyone,

I'm somewhat new to the "audiophile" field. IEMs kind of dragged me into it and now I think it's safe to say that I'm addicted. Anyway, having said that I was wondering if there was a book (or books) that might help me understand this stuff a lot better. I was looking online but I don't see anything that seems geared just towards headphones. This is obviously what I'm most interested in. Anyway, if you guys could recommend some books that would be great. It doesn't have to be solely about headphones but if it included some info on them within the book that would be great.

That's it. Oh, and since everyone seems to LIST their gear around hear I guess I'll just let you all now that in terms of headphones I currently have:

Headwize recommends a couple of books for headphones in its FAQs:

The Loudspeaker and Headphone Handbook by John Borwick (1994, 2nd ed)
The Art of Sound Reproduction by John Watkinson (1998)


Robert Harley's "The Complete Guide to High-End Audio" has just four pages that relate to headphones, headphone amplifiers, binaural recordings, and head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). They mention Headroom and their website. With respect to headphones, you can certainly find much more info on Headroom and Headwize than in Harley's book:

Wikipedia's entry on Headphones might help as well. I myself have contributed to it, and am sure some other Headfiers as well. It has many links where you may find more info and possibly references.

Oh, thanks a lot rsaavedra. I'll definitely check out that book by John Borwick. It seems like a great reference to have around for someone who is interested in this subject. Sorry that I missed the FAQs. I know you guys get annoyed when newbies do that. I had just bought a book called "Capturing Sound" by Mark Katz. It seems like a decent read. You might want to check it out if you haven't already.

Again, the response and suggections contained within are appreciated greatly.

No I haven't, but one comment, for a moment I thought you were referring to a famous mastering engineer with the same last name: Bob Katz, whose book, "Mastering Audio. The Art and the Science," has been in my Amazon shopping cart for years

(but haven't purchased it yet.)
