So I'm back with another novel Meta42 design. It's made out of about two pounds of tumbled clear, blue, and turquoise crushed beach glass, so I've decided to call it the "Blue Crush" amp. (Nothing to do with the surfing movie, really.) This amp was intended to have a distinctive look when used in the dark... there are three blue LEDs at about equally spaced intervals inside (with one between the headphone jack and volume knob), and when seen at night it looks like a glowing blue crystal. I'm not sure the pictures here captures just how cool the effect is at night.

Specs: triple-stacked EL2002, 470uF Cerafines, Alps Blue potentiometer, AD8620 or OPA637 op-amps, etc. And two pounds of beach glass. It's quite heavy for a Meta42!

Is it a translucent case, with the glass applied?

It's really about the most unique (while still attractive

) case job I've seen. Gawd, I hope it's line-powered!

WOW!

Wodgy, your DIY skills are only rivaled by your creativity. Man, that is one of the coolest amps that I have seen (but, I like your picture frame one the best

Of course (DOH!- I have one)... I can now see the PCB slots molded into the sides.

Nice catch.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! I had fun making this one. You're right about the case -- it's a blue translucent Hammond that I coated with clear-drying epoxy and then poured the glass pieces over. I did two coats of the epoxy/glass pieces, but there are places where the glass ended up flush against the plastic and due to the way the light is transmitted it's possible to see the PCB slots. The headphone jack is one of the Neutrik guitar amp varieties that sticks out about a half centimeter beyond the case, which works here so that it doesn't get lost in the glass around it.

I have other interesting ideas for amps -- I wish I had the time to build them all. I have a fairly interesting Pete Millett Hybrid in the pipeline that should hopefully be finished next week (I actually started that one before this amp, but like fellow headfier Minya, had a lot of trouble with Welborne). I also have a USB DAC/headphone amp in the works; this'll be my first completely novel design, so I'm excited.

nanahachi, good luck on your project! It makes me feel good to know that I've helped inspire some neat work. (Tangent, JMT, PPL, and others have all helped inspire me.) In the same spirit, I've been helping Minya with his Millett Hybrid -- it's fun to pass on the DIY good vibrations.
