sorry, miguel, but i agree with bob on this one. gotta wear IEMs/earplugs on long rides on the freeway or highway. in the city i agree that IEMs/earplugs are a bad idea.

even properly fitted helmets are extremely noisy at freeway speeds. here's a bunch of info about helmets and noise and earplugs: http://www.webbikeworld.com/Earplugs/earplugs.htm

note that it's still not legal in california (i don't know about other states) to wear earplugs while riding, but heck, i'll take the chance if it saves my hearing...so while it may not be "legal" to wear earplugs, i agree with bob and others that it's prudent and wise.

I don't think they (earplugs/IEMs) will help much when you get run over or killed by a motor vehicle that you cannot hear comming up on your back or blindside. Sorry, but I'd much rather hear what is going on around me when i ride anywhere. I've been riding bikes since I was a kid and I got my class M1 in 1973.

dunno about you but I would never be able to hear a car coming up my back or blindside at highway speeds with all the wind noise.

Sorry, but this is what I would hear if I weren't wearing plugs or IEMS: RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Now, what about one of many thousands of motor vehicles behind me? Oh *****, I'd better get out of the way!!
