Bigger, Bolder, Better.... The new AMR
Oct 13, 2018 at 1:44 AM Post #16 of 38
I'm very interesed and curious to know if there will be headphone amplifier in the new AMR lineup? Standalone, or incl in the new dac or if the dac will have high power on the analog outputs (as on the new Chord Hugo TT2) capable of driving power hungry headphones?
When can you reveal this information?

Thanks!

We appreciate your interest, but there's no information to reveal. During RMAF we showcased what we wanted to, rest assured more nfo about this particular product we'll reveal soon and that's pretty much it for now.

Just a question... if you have already showcased it in RMAF then why be all cagey about it

Because that showcase at RMAF (or any other large event) with no deep dive into details is what we do from time to time. We tease. Then we tease. Then we tease some more. Then we release a brief intro and several rather long tech papers arrive some time after and release date is revealed. That's what we've been doing for years quite openly.

It was quite a cool "tease". I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the Diablo DAC when it emerges from the design phase!

Folks, RMAF!
Amazing show, amazing vibe, amazing visitors, amazing hardware! And we're there!

Many of our products are to be found at our place, including the full Pro stack (Pro iESL + Pro iCAN + Pro iDSD) and a number of fabulous headphones; Focal Utopia, Final D8000 etc.

And we have something very special in there too! The latest AMR DAC. For now we'll just put these pictures here, but in upcoming weeks we'll reveal more nfo about this machine!

Hey @iFi audio

Did anything ever come of the refresh of AMR and the 20k DAC? Did the project get mothballed for now? No worries if you can't talk about it.

I assume iFi will tell us more about the AMR Diablo DAC in the future. In the meantime, check the RMAF Report in Positive Feedback for initial details.

A Surprise from AMR

On the way to the RMAF show floor, I found myself in the hotel elevator with two audio industry veterans from UK's high end audio company Abbingdon Music Research (AMR) and iFi Audio (AMR's subsidiary that specializes in affordable, portable and mobile audio products): Thorsten Loesch (Chief Designer) and Vincent Luke (Marketing Manager). They were bringing down a large wood crate to the show and when I asked about what was inside Vincent said, "You will want to see this." With an intro like that, my next stop was indeed the iFi Audio booth as Thorsten and Vincent maneuvered the wood crate through the crowds on the way to their exhibit.

When we arrived at the booth and the wood crate was opened, inside was a previously unannounced product—the Diablo DAC, an upcoming statement DAC from AMR. Thorsten took over and gave me a look inside and a guided tour of what is to come. The Diablo DAC will feature two FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chips with custom code developed by AMR, tube output stages, Class A audio, native processing of both PCM and DSD audio (up to DSD 2048) and a host of inputs including I2S, USB, Ethernet, and BNC. The upcoming DAC is planned for the first half of 2019 with a price of "around $20,000."

In talking with Thorsten and Vincent I was also told that the Diablo DAC from AMR was developed along with the new iFi Pro iDSD DAC that was recently released to the market. The Pro iDSD has some "trickle down" features from the statement DAC and the co-development of both products led to the Pro iDSD staying in development a bit longer than originally planned. In fact, iFi says that the Pro iDSD is a "scaled down" version of the Diablo DAC at a fraction of the price (the Pro iDSD sells for $2499).

Given the extensive DAC experience on the AMR and iFi Audio team, I'm looking forward to giving the upcoming AMR Diablo DAC a full audition when it moves from prototype to finished product. It will be a very much anticipated product in the year ahead.

Yeah, I've read that. Thanks for the reminder :)

Thorsten has left iFi, so I'm not sure if he is still doing AMR stuff or whatever. Curious what direction they will go in now.

My understanding is that Thorsten is still doing some consulting work for AMR & iFi. And they've added John Curl to their design team.
Looking forward to seeing and hearing what is to come!

We've been swamped with iFi products, but AMR is far from dead

Once we can, we will discuss it
