I love useless posts, so here's another one. I was thinking the other day about how some lower-end headphones seem to have a high-end counterpart -- a "big brother," so to speak, with a similar sonic profile, just better. Examples:

-When I bought my new Sony V6s, my first thought when listening to them was, "a baby Senn HD590." (Both of them have an even bigger brother -- the Sony CD3000.)
-Senn HD497: its big brother would be the Senn HD580.
-Senn HD280Pro: Someday, if it eats its spinach, it will grow up into an Ultrasone HFI-650 Trackmaster

they have similar sounds, but the grados are a touch more refined with controlled bass.

Can't say I find that obvious..Having owned both at the same time, I found the K1000 to sound very different actually.

Very interesting, jim! How are K501 and K1000 different sounding (apart from the rolled-off treble of the former)? I always believed the K1000 is a more treble oriented, detailed, punchy free-space K501.

HD580 grows to be a HD600 (and soon a HD650, if all goes well)
