Beyerdynamics, which one?

In my recent quest to hear the major brand players in the headphone arena, I need to find a pair of Beyerdynamics. However, which one?

I do not know the differences between the years or the subtle nuances. I have looked at the frequency response graphs and the DT880 or the DT990 seem like good candidates.

I would like to get the 32 ohm impedance variety, since then I can compare my low impedance cans fairly.

Yes I know there is significant synergy with amps and headphones, but I want to settle on a headphone first, and then look for synergy with an amp.

Currently
-Senn 650: Hated it, sold off very quickly.
-Sony 5ks: Loved it, but then . . .
-Ultrasone 2500: Found these after the Sony 5ks and I love them.

So then I thought to get the Edition 9s, but I still have not heard many other brands.

-Grado 325i: Actually really really like them. Am considering moving up the Grado line.
-Darth "Boobies": very different than what I currently have, kinda dark. But nice. They are also art work, so quite nice.

Want to try the unaltered Beyers, or try a flatter sounding Darth.

cash is not a huge concern (but always relevant).

Opinions?

Edit: What about the HP3000s? How do they rank in the my headphone quest?

The DT990 is basically a Grado with soundstage, more comfort, and the ability to survive a nuclear war. It's more bassy than the Grados I've heard. I'm not sure how you can get 32 ohm versions outside of the Manufacture site, though.

Woot, 600!

Thanks. I am curious between the differences between the 880 and the 990. I can not tell the major difference? Seems like the 990 is more expensive MSRP, but the 880 costs more retail?

What else am I missing?

Yea, I'd like to know where to get the 32 ohm version (besides the custom site at Beyer). If I get them there, I'm going all black!

Been looking some more, I am so confused on the 770 vs the 880 vs the 990.

There are a mess of threads around here about those phones (e.g. search dt880 dt990 soundstage)... From what I've read the 770s are bass hounds & may not be comparable to the less colored presentation of the 880s.

From lots of research, my latest cans are 880s & I like them alot (there's a good review of them around here that is spot on w/my thoughts so far). BTW, doing it again, I *might* have tried the 990s for their reported extra bass & there's a pair in the marketplace right now.

Good luck & remember there are no perfect phones...
As I said before it's like trying to pick just *one* of Charlie's Angels to keep... They all have their merits & you'd always be pondering what the others are like.

DT990's and Grado's don't sound anything alike to my ears. The DT990's have a massive bass hump, recessed mids, and a very unique treble sizzle.

Grado's have more laid back, and tighter bass. Very prominent mids, and a consistently energetic treble section (vs the DT990's treble spike sizzle)

If money isn't a big concern, buy DT-770 and let Larry convert them to Darth's...

I have the deep cup darth v3 (boobs), and I go back and forth if I like 'em or not.

Any place in the States to get the 32 ohm version (besides at Beyer factory)?

Driving to the store & getting there is boring.

Driving to the store & getting in a multi-vehicle accident at high speed & flying through the windshield is fun & colorful (blood & all).

I wouldn't know about fun, but colorful is accurate. Maybe to the guy on the side of the road...

I haven't heard the 880s but among the 770s and the 990s, i loved the 990s the best. They really are fun cans. More so than grados i feel.

Yea, well, reading that from a Senn fanboi . . . you'll forgive me if I don't care.
