I have had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium 600 ohm headphones for just short of 7 months. Whilst listening the other day, the right ear just cut out, and that was that, it wouldn't come back. I've looked on Amazon and there are a few who have had this problem.

I contacted the seller who I bought them off and they refunded straight away which I was surprised at, so my question is, do Beyerdynamic have reliability problems?

I've bought a pair of Philips Fidelio x2 's to replace them, which feel a much better built headphone, but I don't really like the sound of them, there's a muddiness to the mids that I don't like, so they may go back, as to me they don't have the clarity and sparkle of the Beyers.

So a further question, is there anything with a similar sound to the Beyerdynamics, but better built and more reliable, or have I just been unlucky with the pair I got?

I would recommend something like the HiFiMAN HE400i or the Senn HD600. Neither is going to have the bass of the DT990, but they will have extended treble and remarkable neutraility. I think you would like either one. Whether they would have sufficient sparkle for you I do not know. You would probably need to listen to them.

What amp are you using?

Thanks for your reply. I did have a pair of HD600's that lasted me 17 years, but sound wise, I found the DT990's far superior to my ears, so they're a no no. I'll have a look at the others you mention, must admit to never having heard of them before.

I'm using either an Onkyo Tx nr646, or a Little dot Mk2.
