Can anyone tell me if there are any sonic differences between these two, or are the differences purely in look and feel? Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere - I couldn't find it if it has.

QUOTE// '' As regards sound, both versions feature equal quality. Due to the fact the PRO version uses a stronger headband, this headphone may sound a bit more voluminous and has a slightly tighter fit. Another difference is that the DT 990 PRO features a coiled cable. This is preferred in studio environments, because the cable could be damaged when you roll over it with your chair while monitoring your mix. The Consumer version has got a 3 meters straight cable. Therefore you can still listen to your hifi-system from the sofa, for example.'' This was the reply from Beyerdynamic H.Q. when another head-fier contacted them with exactly the same question. The slightly tighter headband on the Pros can be easily remedied (if needed) all you have to do is flex it very slightly . If you get the chance, then try to directly compare the two together and you may be in for a pleasant surprise

So how can 990 05 sound "a lot better" when they're basically the same?

i got my dt990 250ohm (not pro) for $220 + $20shipping from inetdistributors on ebay. they are authorized dealer. they have the price at something like $329 but you can make an offer. i offered $220 and they accepted. you might even be able to get it for a little less. i also got my hd650 from them.

DT 990Pro is less smiley, more accurate. It has got the old style transducer housing, while DT990 - 2005 have ribbed grills. It is not the clamping force doing all the job of the difference but also different construction. Bass and treble bumps in DT990 -2005's are too high for me. The highs simply hurt my ears. DT990 Pro's are very good headphones, anyway.

It looks like $215 is the magic number for inetdistributors. They wouldn't go for $210, but they bit on $215 w/ $15 shipping. The Dt990 2005 for $230 shipped is a fantastic bargain imo.

i thought the treble was too high in the beginning but it's gotten a lot better just after 10 hours of burn-in, and it just gets better and better with more playing time. the bass has become tighter also.

I actually wish the DT990 2005s clamped harder. I can't quite head bang with them on.
