My music will be pop/ rock.

My system is Lavry DA10, corda Opera amp, PC.

In order to listen to the DT990 '05 without pain, you need a built in treble roll-off in your ears.

Also, the DT990's bas quantity is bigger but quality lower - compared to the DT880's. The latter are more universal and not so fatiguing. Their midrange is more present and pleasant as well. I know a metalhead who uses the DT990 Pro's - for me this is the prefered DT990 version as well.

majkel is right....

the DT880 has a more neutral sounding signature...

while the DT990 has extended highs and can be piercing to some...

the mids are slightly recessed as well...

but i disagree on the bass though...im loving mine

(granted ive never really tried the DT880)

The 880 is already pretty bright, I don't want to try a 990. I think that, if you have a slightly bassy amp, or a tube one, you'll love the 880 and dislike the 990. I know I chose for the 880 after all.

The best version of all of these is the DT990, 600 ohm version. It completely solves the treble issue of the DT990. The DT990's bass is every bit as good as the DT880, but there is more of it, which some people find objectionable. If you like a healthy amount of bass, get the DT990/600. If not, get the DT880/600. These have to be ordered from the Beyer Manufacture site, but they are easily worth the extra money. Note that you do also need a competent amp to drive 600 ohm headphones.

Skylab, I guess the things you say about the 600 ohm version apply to the tube amps only, especially OTL's. For SS amps like OP's Corda Opera it shouldn't matter if it's 250 or 600 ohm, the latter needing just a bit more volume to be as loud as the regular impedance version.
Regarding the bass - I've reported my impressions and those of other people owning both models. I won't argue it's the same just more in the DT990's. It might be that way as well. I listened to the DT990's from Graham Slee Solo and a decent CD player several months ago, my impressions might be inaccurate after that time.

I had both DT990/250 (2005) and DT880/250 (2005). DT990 has a lot of fun. Its very aggressive highs pair well with SET EL84 tube amp. DT880 is boring (lifeless) and very accurate. It paires excellent with Laconic LunchBox II OTL tube amp. LunchBox II makes DT880 to sound much lively, not boring at all.

I abandoned both cans and got HD650. It bests them both in most genres, except heavy metal and rap, where DT990 wins.

That was not my experience. I directly compared the 2005 250 ohm and 600 ohm versions of both on the Meier Opera, and found the 600 ohm versions to be smoother. The 600 ohm versions are actually different in terms of construction, so why would you say they would not differ sonically with SS amps?

Well, I've been told that the only difference is the coil having different wire gauge and number of turns, making it 600 ohm. If it differs on the Corda Opera I won't argue. I own the DT880 Pro's, anyway and chose them because of sound signature I prefer to the DT880 '05. Mainly, the soundstage and imaging is better for me in the Pro's.

I agree that the difference in the 600 ohm is different wire gauge and number of turns, however it seems to me that would be quite sufficient to lead to audible sonic differences. As Beyer indicates, this leads to a lighter moving mass than with the 250 ohm version.

But the 600 ohm cans do sound even better with tubes

Cut the crap about intolerable treble.
It is possible to have a pleasant, unfatiguing time with DT990.
You just need a warm tube/SS and a warm dac and there you have it..
I believe the result is even greater with the 600 ohm version.
I am so much enjoying mine that i gave up trying to listen a K701 and a 03' DT880
(I much prefer the 05 version).
